Where do the pros get their weather?

Unread post by Hop Harrigan » Thu Oct 27, 2016 10:19 am

Hi,
There's a lot of discussion on Avcom about the best sources for SA weather info. and many suggestions on various independent sources.
Two questions:
1) Where do the airline Ops people get the weather data for their pilots (radar picture, Synoptics, icing etc) and
2) What is the source of weather data in SA required for LEGAL IF flight?

Apologies - having properly read your post I see what you're asking.
Airlines in SA (from the one that I know) use weathersa. As do corporate outfits I used to work for.
Foreign airlines (again - the one I know) use WAFC London for charts, notams, ashtams etc.
You can't go wrong with weathersa, and backing it up with any other means.

Never come across a legal or illegal source for weather. But I suppose the SA weather office would be where the CAA would go to find out if a weather report was obtained by a pilot.

Hi jalopy,
Thanks...I guess that the SA Weather service must be the suppliers of the raw weather data which is then massaged by all the different providers out there. So maybe it's the 'horses mouth' source. Often thought that it's s pity that this info is not provided to airborne aircraft in this country. I would have thought that it would be simple enough to piggy back on the cellular transmitters which now pretty much cover the entire country.
Cheers, Hop

On the same subject...
Jhb (FAIR) weather radar been unavailable for a couple of days. At this time of the year with thunderstorms most days, this is a pretty critical service to just be unavailable! Pretty shoddy state of affairs wot?

I use Easyweather with my Easyplan and have been tracking the storms over Gauteng daily for the past week or so - no problem with Irene radar at all. I even use it when not flying - will I get soaked if I leave for a jog now? - works pretty well.
Just checked it now before posting and it is fine.
Aviation weather website also fine:

Iceberg/Segg,
Surely only SA Weather Service has the means to acquire raw weather data? I can't imagine any private company putting up dozens of weather stations and radars around SA?
If so, how do these other services/apps get their raw data...for example at the moment almost none of the weather radars on weatherSA are working, so where do these images originate...foreign weather satellites maybe?

The radars are working and the data comes from SAWS - just the weatherSA site is not up to standard.

aaaaaaaand FAIR is down AGAIN

What I suspect is Ottosdal (OTD) which has been down for months and suddenly worked again is also down, along with FABL, FABM, FAEO, FAPP etc...

Does anyone know a website that one can get the Radar image like SAWS present it? I've already got EasyWeather, but I prefer seeing the storms like the SAWS present them as it gives me quite good info at a glance for planning
