Panel upgrade help

Unread post by Mrb13676 » Wed Sep 05, 2018 1:35 pm

Hi all.
Looking at buying my first aircraft as a 100h PPL. I’m leaning heavily toward the Cherokee 235 series but many have no autopilots and steam gauges.
My end game is to keep the aircraft for many years and progress to the IF rating so need an IF capable platform. Unfortunately, I am having very little progress in the avionics companies replying to mails requesting info on pricing for an autopilot install (and ideally something NOT requiring vacuum, like an Aspen PFD or a set of G5s).

Can anyone offer any advise on what route to take? - and ideas on cost to install?
Or would it be easier to find one with a proper autopilot given that the rand is in free fall and these are all dollar priced items?

You may find that the avionics upgrade will cost more than the aircraft which is why most are all rather ancient.
Call Shane at Century avionics +27 11 701 3244, they can help and will be displaying most of this gear at AAD this year.

I suspect as much. I really like the look of the G5’s though and bang for buck there can’t be too much better for a certified aircraft. I’m always worried when no prices are listed for items though...

US pricing for a certified G5 is $2200, will be a tad more here.
You will need more than a couple of G5's though.

Mrb,

Go have a look in the "Aircraft for sale" section at the 1978 Cherokee 6 -260. :D (if it is still available). Will make a whole lot of sense.

I was looking at doing the same thing in my C210. 2 x G5's and the GFC 500 Autopilot. This is a huge improvement to any panel, you'll still keep some steam dials, but only as back-up as the dual G5 setup will give you everything you need.
The GFC500 is also a modern auto pilot which integrates with the G5. It seems like the STC might already be complete as well.

Piper PA-28

Models: 140, 150, 151, 160, 161, 180, 181

MRP $7000

I think you're probably in for between R200 & R300k, but well worth the money.

I fly with two G5s (NTCA) and they are great. However, with my slightly colour-blindness and deteriorating eye sight, I find some of the numbers (sometimes) a bit hard to read when they are in odd colours. For my next project I am looking at the Aspen Evolution E5 (NTCA again) for $4 995. It seems easier to read and a bit bigger. :D

Yeah, STC for the GFC500 expected in the next year for the Cherokee 235. Prices are crazy - S-Tec20 (single axis) is $9k. 55x is north of $13k which at R15.50 (or is it more now?) to the dollar..... Eish

Is "smooth" a euphemism for heavily greased?

And that's why all these old aircraft still look like they are in the 50's.

Hi

I believe that the cost effective way to single pilot IF, is to find a very well cared for a/c with a properly functioning autopilot in a steam gauge panel environment (that might not be a 235)
You can always then increase your situational awareness with a tablet running a moving map / synthetic vision app on the side
other options are going to be significantly more expensive.

It is truly mind boggling how the certified equipment prices have to kill any ability to modernize a panel of a well functioning 1970's airframe :( :( :(
