ADS-B, to equip, or not

Unread post by Taildraggerdriver » Tue Dec 04, 2018 7:58 am

Hi there,
ADS-B out is pretty simple to understand and the benefits are obvious.
My question
Does ATNS “re broadcast” ADS-B data to benefit ADS-B in equipped airplanes.
In other words.
If my airplane is “ADS-B in” equipped, will I see any data on a display ,
I am not referring to TCAS or ACAS.
Cheers.

The current plan does not include ADS-B broadcasts, except in some CTRs. So you don't get any of the information services in SA.

But, if you get an ADS-B transponder with ADS-B In capability, then you can see the position of all other ADS-B equipped aircraft in the area (from direct reception of their ADS-B broadcast).

That’s what I guessed, but wasn’t sure.
Thanks

Just found this article,
Is this what is going to happen.
Any info would be appreciated
BTW, I pulled the trigger on a ADS-B in unit,
Just keen to know what’s happening
Also, what drives the info given to Flightradar24 with regards to airplanes over Africa over countries which have limited ATC and radar

I saw my AME on Saturday and it is definitely still on the cards for April 2020.
New registrations require an ADS-B transponder (TCA with transponder), and if you replace your transponder it must be ADS-B according to him.
I have to start waking up myself - The Garmin 345 looks like a good unit - any other ideas?
It's going to cost in the region of R50K unfortunately. :(

I have fitted a GTX335, which is ADS-B out only,
I don’t know if the ADS-B In is worth having in SA as there are no , according to my knowledge, ATC units which te transmit the information
A 345 is great, but then you need to have avionics which can display the incoming data, or a stand alone IPad type device which can hook up via Bluetooth

I have A GTN650 and an Aspen 1000 - so would be nice to see traffic on both. If weather radar ever gets added, that would be a bonus.
For now I download the radar picture onto Easycockpit on the fly (Ipad on the yoke) - if necessary and if there is signal.
Something like a GDL 39 receiver using bluetooth and the Ipad would be a cheaper option for 'In' data.

Another option: a Stratus 3 ADS-B receiver. See:

ADSB is not coming for 2020 so don’t let anyone fool you. It will not come to SA for a long time. The document that was sent out was for discussion only not implementation. Read the AIC carefully it was for discussion. CAA will also not enforce it on new imports at this stage. System may be up and running at ATNS etc to a degree.
