Fuel flow meter for IO 360

Unread post by paulincapetown » Sat Sep 06, 2014 10:07 am

Need a bit of help /advice please?
I initially had a red cube fitted to my RV7 but for some reason, after a month or so of it working correctly it started giving erratic readings and would never settle i.e 0.4 lt /phr at full power going up to 46 lt then down to 3 lt as example. I thought it was the unit and replaced it with a black metal Mgl FF unit and installed it at same place. See pic

The new unit is doing the same thing - erratic readings. I have cleaned it out tested it and the red LED is on but not flashing. I am able to get a constant read on it when blowing gently through unit so starting to think unit ok and wondering if positioning of the unit could be the problem?

Paul, if you read the paperwork that should be/was supplied with the FF meter, you will see that a straight run of 6 to 8 inches before and after the sensor is required to avoid turbulence. Having a 90 degree fitting before and after the unit, is the worst you could possibly do and will cause turbulence/bubbles to pass through the turbine.

Having said that, you say it worked well for a month before the trouble started. In that case, have the instrument/EFIS checked.

My advice, fit straight fittings before and after the FF meter, then replace the fuel pipe from the fuel pump to the FF meter with a slightly longer one. If you have to have a loop in this pipe, it will be much better than a 90 degree bend.

Paul the Red Cube is the best there is - IF installed correctly. I have told K at the time that this install might give problems.
The leaflet clearly states that the wiring must be on top and that the outlet should not drop down from the FF sender unit.
See the picture here of your original install.

While it looks sturdy and safe it is is not as per the instructions. See below.
