D-Motor powered Explorer ZU-FTD

Unread post by stefan » Mon Mar 12, 2012 8:17 pm

D-Motor powered Explorer under construction. We have aquired the African agency for the D-Motor. The engine will be ideal for use in trikes and LSA planes. It is fuel injected and the fuel burn is only 14l/hr at full power. The engine averages 10l/hr. There is a 120hp version in the pipe line which will be available by the end of 2012. This is a very interesting motor. I was at Kitplanes today flew in from Hoedspruit and took a look at the engine. It would be interesting to see how they perfom in the market.

Anyway, nice meeting you Stefan :D

Engine running perfect. The installation was very simple and straight forward. We weighed the plane and even with all the extra's we installed she came in at 317,5kg. That gives us a useful load of 282,5kg and an endurance of just under 11 hours at cruise speed.. =D> =D> =D> We have a winner.

Of to CAA on monday for the paperwork. This baby is smelling the air

Have done about 8-10 hours flying in total. The motor is sweet but the cooling is a struggle. I am on the 4th radiator and it is only now at a stage where I can stay airborn for longer than a circuit. The PFA has expired so I will have to renew that before I can do more testing.

I removed the engine to send back to Belgium for a upgrade to the new 95hp version but I have not gotten around to the shipping yet. I installed a Rotax in the airframe and sold it on so the D-motor will probably go into my trike in the 80hp form. I am waiting for their 6 cylinder to complete testing.

Stefan,

Could this engine be fitted to the original Bushbaby? Would it maybe be to heavy?

How do they perform with a 582 and p-prop?

This tailwheel training has gotten me hooked....

Hi Jayson,
Yes they will fit the Bushbaby but I still need to get hold of the newer version engines to sort the cooling issues. This engine that I have produces too much heat for the closed cowl setup. They work perfect in trikes and aircraft like the X air where they are in the open. This engines weighs only 3 or 4 kg more than a 582 fully installed. The Bushbaby flies fine with a 582. Just keep it light and forget all the gadgets.

We warned you that tailwheel flying is addictive.........

How much is still left to complete before she would be able to fly do you think?

It tough to judge just from the photos
