Accidentally came across this "blast from the past" vid of the boy-band, The Soft Shoes. It brought back some old memories.

(A quick bit of Soft Shoes history: The band, made up of Jervis Pennington, Darren Magnusson, Roy Bramwell and Tinus Maree, won the SABC's "Follow That Star" contest in 1983 for their song, "Elvis Astaire"...)

I met Darren and Jervis before their fame as members of The Soft Shoes. Apart from my musician activities elsewhere, I was also the resident DJ at the "White Horse Inn" (Randburg) and sound techie and effects lighting operator for the Inn's "supper club" cabaret shows, including renowned choreographer Neil McKay's "Razzle-Jazzle" and "City Dancin'". I remember Darren as the male dance lead in the shows, and boy, could he and the "Razzle Jazzle" girls dance up a storm! (even at the late night "after-parties" which Jarvis sometimes attended)

So it was a bit of a shock seeing this vid as the Soft Shoes certainly had some rather cheesy moves, which belies the fact that Darren was actually a magnificent dancer, and even an SA Latin American dance champion, at some time. (Edit: Admittedly, I didn't watch the entire vid through the first time due to the poor sound, but subsequently I found that Darren and the dancers were actually featuring from around 20:25 in, with Darren doing his signature high lift from around 21:05)

But anyway, here they are, with Jarvis (1st from the right) and Darren (2nd from the right) in the line song:

Also but yah, Time and Life has not been kind to any of us. Sheesh, do we all look really old now or what?

Darren probably won't recognise me now as I look completely different from back then, but he might remember my girlfriend at the time (A petite lass with long hair down past her backside almost like Crystal Gayle's, and a heavy Mancunian accent - who could drink any bloke under the table. The Inn's owner even told me not to ever bring her along again. Sitting alone while I'm doing my thing, she got guys who approached her so totally drunk-arsed they ended up fighting over her and causing a big disturbance outside   )

As we enter December and the coming festive season, but with me seriously stressing over a number of things, it inspired me to finally complete this particular arrangement - a "one-man symphony orchestra" cover of Alan Menken's 1991 melody.

I dedicate it to all the loving couples out there. Here's hoping you enjoy it as much as I have enjoyed producing it.

With "silly season" now truly upon us (and being a Monday too :P), causing peoples' nerves to spike for various reasons, throw on your 40s pilot bunny jacket (if you haven't got one, pretend man, pretend :)); pour your favourite tipple; turn the volume up on this one, and just chilllll...
