EOS 550D not recognised by PC

Unread post by ColdFingers » Thu Jan 10, 2019 10:50 am

When I connect my trusty Canon EOS 550D to my PC with a USB cable I get a "USB device not recognised" message on my PC.

I have Googled and searched the Net far and wide without success.

The only way I can get pictures onto my PC now is with an SD card reader. It works, but a bit of a pain.

Numerous sources recommend reloading/upgrading the firmware on the camera but this is not possible as I cannot connect the camera to my PC!

The only clue I have is that, if I remember correctly, this problem started after upgrading my PC to Windows 10. But I cannot be 100% sure about this.

Any suggestions or help would be appreciated.

Hi Andy

I usually remove my SD card to download as I have renamed the cards for specific purposes. I will check tonight if I have similar issues using the usb cable on my 550. Will keep you posted.

You can update Canon software over the cable or by copying the downloaded, unzipped file to a blank SD card and go to the system menu and choose the "use SD card" in the menu for firmware updates.

worth checking if you need to load any canon software on your PC though these devices tend to appear as generic removable drives. Else firmware as suggested.

Hi ColdFingers, have you tested the USB cable itself? Remember, these things do sometimes go faulty, no matter how well you look after them. Also try it with another cable, any standard mini-USB cable will work. I don't see the software as the cause of this problem.

Eish Windows 10 again...

Does it recognize any other device using the same USB cable? If not...

Have you tried this? Roll back the Generic USB Hub Driver for the ports on your motherboard. If the roll back works, it was a USB driver update for Windows 10 that caused it.

Microsoft loves using their own generic drivers, which are not specific to the brand of motherboard per se, and it can screw things up...it does the same with graphics cards.

They should nuke Win10.

Is there an option on your camera to set it up as a 'memory device' on USB.
Windows will then see the camera as a memory stick (no software installation required) and you can access the DCIM folders to upload the photos.
I do this with all phones and cameras.. works ok.
The supplied software that comes with the cameras are a pain where the sun don't shine.

Thanks all for the suggestions and help. I've tried everything suggested but the problem persists. Looks like it is a hardware problem on the camera.

This is what I have done:

Upgraded the firmware to version 1.1.0. DId it via the SD card. Download files and instructions here. https://www.canon.co.uk/support/consume ... 14-1505802

Tried different USB cables.

Tried different PCs (still need to try a non-Windows10 PC)

Tried rolling back USB drivers.

Updated USB drivers

Reinstalled Canon software on my PC.

Next time I am in Pretoria/Jhb I will take it into a Canon shop for them to have a look.

Hi

Have you tried uninstalling all your USB controllers via device manager. Then switch the PC off and restart.

I remember that my Win 10 system started seeing my EOS camera as a USB connected TV at one stage.

So I uninstalled all of the USB controllers from the device manager and let Windows rebuild it all from scratch.

May also be best to get the drivers for the above directly from the motherboard manufacturer website instead of Windows 10 overriding the drivers. But if that manufacturer stopped making drivers with Win 7 - you're going to have Win10 overriding it with its own controller driver which isn't always ideal.

As for me - I've eventually batted Win 10 out of the door here...too many issues. No such issues since.
