alternative route Durbs to Joburg

Unread post by Sideslip » Thu Mar 28, 2019 10:58 am

My parents are in Natal at the moment and due to drive home tomorrow (Friday).

I see the N3 is closed at Mooiriver due to protesting truck drivers and there are several vehicles set alight etc.... This has been going on for 2 days so could well go on for another day (or more).

What are the best alternatives with good roads? I'm sure the N2 to Richardsbay will be reasonably good but what is the route inbound to Joburg like from there?

Mooi river is a mission as there are no easy alternatives.
The last time this happened I detoured at PMB for Greytown, towards Ladysmith then back to the N3 just before Van Reenens.
The greytown road was fine, just needed concentration and to keep an eye for goats.

you don't say where they are but mention the N2 up to R/Bay

if they are Dbn side or even up the north coast a bit they can go maritzburg, albert falls, greytown, weenen, colenso, ladysmith
or
Stanger, greytown, weenen, colenso, ladysmith

I drove most of that late last year, the Stanger bit is very scenic but it is a little country style, off the main roads they will go through some villages that will have speed bumps, pedestrians and cattle occaisonally, but the roads were good.

N2 up the coast to Stanger
R74 towards Greytown
Continue up to join the R103 at Colenso
On to R103 to Van Reenan
