White fly plague

Unread post by Jack Welles » Sat Mar 30, 2019 1:28 pm

Especially on the tomato plants

Any farmers/gardeners out there with good ideas for the clearing up of our little veg garden of these pesky critters?

Eddie,

Your unwanted (but certainly thankful) visitors are : Aleyrodidae.
They love tomatoes and live under the leaves of the plant and bore into the "channels" that feed the plant and cause the plant to wither and ultimately die. Many are by now resistant to normal garden pesticides and will survive common aerosol deterrents.

The best solution as far as I know is citronellal - they do not like that.
You could try planting some Melissa Officinalis (the Citronellal plant) in between the Tomato plants.
The odour is enough to get the pesky buggers to contemplate emigration.

You can also dilute some citronella oil and spray the leaves with it (especially underside) - the oil will stick to the leaves

Cheers

...or simply spray with dilute Jeyes fluid! Always worked for me in Durbs where there were plenty of nasty creatures after our veggies!

I have used https://livingseeds.co.za/aphid-and-whi ... =white+fly, in my aquaponic system.
I couldn't risk poisoning my fish....

It is essentially a yellow card (to attract) with a glue that stays sticky but doesn't dry.

The flies gets stuck in the glue - and nothing else gets sprayed/polluted with pesticides and bad stuff.

Interesting suggestion! Thanks! I'd agree that stuff like Jeyes Fluid should bump them off but then would worry about eating the lettuce etc afterwards. Not sure to what extent washing the veg would get the stuff off. Also checking the citronella story.

Thanks, guys. Interesting suggestions. Our soapy water spray hasn't been doing to trick.

 Tough white flies in Muzies. Must be the ozone

Gewone Engelse sout in water sal die ding doen....spuit gereeld.....behoort ook iets te doen vir "constipation" as jy dit oordoen.
