UD - are you sure those little units haves a lead acid battery? - I rather imagined it was new Lithium Ion or whatever?
ie a new technology - and more ok for deep cycle heavy discharge.
I referred to the unit in Jack's last picture. That is LA, the others are Lithium.

Lead acid batteries come in 3 flavors regarding the electrolyte system. Wet, Gel & AGM.

The Gill G35 in your C185 was a "wet" battery. If you turned it over without the caps the acid would run out.
"Gel" is where the acid is contained in a silica dust forming a putty. Some may be operated on their sides.
Then there are AGM "Absorbed Glass Mat" where the acid is contained in a fiberglass mat. The mat is as wet as an airline hand wipe.

Cheers.

I can not remember what the C185 had …..
Do not have a conscious memory of ever any issues with starting up …….

The "advise" was to buy the Gel battery due to very low temps in winter (apparently Gel Batteries are less prone to "damage")
(Wife's car stays in Germany when we are in Spain - and stands idle in unheated Garage for months during frost periods).

No idea - price diffs was negligible ….

I have one of those small modern battery jump starters (Li-something) and find it to be awesome at starting vehicles up to 3L Diesel. Paul can explain, I can't. If you hook it up to a dead battery and turn the key, not much happens so you give up. If you turn the key and hold it in 'start,' it takes a second or two to make the battery wake up and crank out the amps. Then it works like a charm and does not deplete much.

If you use it as a cellphone charger, it seems to lose an inordinate amount of charge.

I have ones of these... absolutely brilliant. Get multiple jump starts out of a single charge and had no issue cranking my 4.7l V8 or my wife's diesel Kombi. Also handy to charge laptops / cellphones etc when traveling.

Guy,
Try Mark Becker at Morningstar as he imported some a few years ago and I got one from him. Adendorff Machinery Mart in Montague Gardens also stocks them for R895 https://www.adendorff.co.za/product/mac ... p-starter/
