People get guns to protect themselves from others with guns.
Makes sense, except that the ecosystem created for this allows guns to fall into the wrong hands.
The gun that was pointed at those affected by crime was almost certainly originally sourced legally before ending up being used for crime.

A 2016 US survey of criminals involved in gun crime, showed that more than half had stolen the weapons, 7% had been found, 25% given to them as a gift by someone else.

The stats are fairly clear, for the small number who actually end up needing their weapon, there are a lot more who will find themselves staring at one that was originally bought to make someone else feel safer.

Gun related deaths by country. Suicide and homicide. More guns = more deaths.
529px-2010_homicide_suicide_rates_high-income_countries.png
Yet when it comes to suicide as a whole and not cherry picked stats the picture changes dramatically. And Japan that is a gun free country has a higher suicide rate than the USA.

Interesting! Imagine what will happen if you give them guns..

I wonder why the suicide rate is so high in the Eastern European countries?..

That’s not the only reason people get them. There are many reasons for owning a gun.

Yup, I agree. The police should therefore be disarmed forthwith as the SAPS lose 8 times more guns than civilians...

Don’t forget the successful amnesty Gun Free SA were key in arranging only for the SAPS to sell the surrendered guns to the Cape Flats gangsters.
ps. By successful I mean legal FA surrendered and very few illegal FA handed in.

Probably have the same number of suicides but now it will be the guns fault.

In gun free/controlled nations the police forces aren't armed, they have special armed units for that purpose.
Any system where weapons are put into circulation creates the opportunity for abuse and corruption, whether civvie or not.
It's all part of the same problem and cycle - the one can't exist without the other.

The makeup may vary by country but it is the same result.
The manufacture of weapons is heavily regulated - all weapons start off their life legally.

Many emigrants are former gun owners and most will end up in places where they will never own one or need to.
It is somewhat ironic that guns supposedly make you safer but they seek out places where they are either banned or heavily restricted, because it is safer there.

We've had that discussion already further up.
At 285 deaths per year, if that's how you measure failure, then may we get as good at failing as they are.
I'll take those odds thank you very much.

Granted it’s lower than here but it’s on the increase.

indeed, but that is off a very low base.
a small increase on a large number is way more painful than a big increase on a small one.

The difference here is the Brits will do something about it - historically they have been able to get rates down, but that is pre-austerity - and not just hope that it gets better.
When they eventually stop arguing about Brexit that is :D

Eisch Frans - the addition of suicide to this graphic is, in my not humble opinion, the definition of a fallacious argument. I am quite confident that gun ownership has a negligible correlation with suicide.
The older I get, the more I am convinced that "A Confederacy of Dunces" is non fiction.

A firearms unit is an armed unit within each territorial police force in the United Kingdom.[1] For the most part, the police forces of the United Kingdom are unarmed; however, all have firearms units to provide the police force with the capability to deal with terrorists and armed criminals.
