The airbags are ineffective without seatbelts worn.
Not only ineffective. They can be dangerous when activated without use of a seatbelt. The design is such that you should hit the airbag and not the airbag hit you when they deploy. They deploy with massive, massive force. If you are already too close (due lack of seatbelt) they will seriously injure you.
The airbag deployment force is quite something and it's all over before you even know it.

From Wiki:
Typically, the decision to deploy an airbag in a frontal crash is made within 15 to 30 milliseconds after the onset of the crash, and both the driver and passenger airbags are fully inflated within approximately 60–80 milliseconds after the first moment of vehicle contact.
This article was an interesting one:

Fairly important to hit the airbag squarely. The seatbelts ensure that it happens that way. Hook it over the seat and become a crash test dummy

Mostly you okes think:
Self inflicted
Future resurrection

What about his comrades taking him out.? It seems they quite favor using cars as a weapon.

How do you reckon it could have been done Spokes?

I dont know but with a modern car something as simple as a computer chip plugged into the cars computer. With my Volvo I can't even turn the engine off unless the computer is happy Ive met all its demands.
Remember all the accidents involving Toyotas in California a couple of years ago. Computers turning on the taps to full throttle and drivers becoming packs up to the point of impact.

That was traced back to bad floor mats and, in some cases, loose parts.
It was never attributed to anything electronic.
A manual corolla is not that sophisticated, you could just push the clutch in.

The suggestion of a "hacked" ECU is a bit CSI and far too sophisticated for SA.
Our bad guys tend to draw the line at pulling up alongside and filling the target with holes.
100% brute force, 0% sophistication.
