Why not? Geez, Jacko, surely you should (by now) also know that a woman's smiles can be very misleading. There's NOTHING more disruptive and dangerous than a peed-off woman... 8-[

Just remember though, the last time a European country started a war, it didn't turn out so good for them.

In the same, um, vein, let's hope China never decides to invade the RSA. Just ONE detachment of their female soldiers...

Imagine if all the countries of the world spent all that time and effort on doing good as opposed to preparing for war ...

Back to the original post: Personally, I have no issue with woman in these types of positions. The bigger question is always about how suitable their qualifications and experience is for the particular job. A defence minister is of course a politician first, while the chief of the defence force is supposed to make the actual military decisions. So, I guess the ideal minister of defence would be someone who has a good understanding of the military, but also have a strong standing in political circles, given that they have to convince the other politicians about things like budgets and policy.

By the way, someone mentioned Golda Meir: She was of course not defence minister, but rather prime minister of Israel. Although it is historically fairly common in Israel for the prime minister to also serve as defence minister, it wasn't the case with her. Her Defence minister was actually Moshe Dayan.

So, out of interest, I tried to find out what the backgrounds of the people in the original photograph are. It appears the first photo of the female defence ministers was taken around 2017, since several of them are not in that position anymore. I think I identified everyone correctly:

Netherlands: Ank Bijleveld
Civil servant, starting in Enschede municipal council, member of House of Representatives, Mayor of Twente.

Albania: Olta Xhaçka
Bachelor's in Political Science and International Relations, civil society activist, career politician.

Norway (until 2017): Ine Marie Eriksen Søreide
Studied law, career politician.

Italy (until 2018): Roberta Pinotti
Studied modern literature, high school teacher before becoming politician.

Germany (until July 2019): Ursula von der Leyen
Studied economics, then became physician specialising in woman's health, then housewife before entering politics.

Lower group of pictures:
Russia: Sergey Shoygu
Studied civil engineering, worked on various construction projects before entering politics. Became Minister of Emergency Situations (in Russia - semi-police, semi-military type of organisation). According to Wikipedia: "He became popular because of his hands-on management style and high visibility during emergency situations, such as floods, earthquakes and acts of terrorism." Minister of Defence since 2012.

Iran: Amir Hatami
Career military officer in Iran regular army. Brigadier General before becoming Minister of Defence.

China (until 2018): Chang Wanquan
Career military officer, worked his way up through the general officer ranks to full general in 2007 before becoming minister of defence.
