Tito, where's my money?!

Unread post by SlowApproach » Tue Sep 10, 2019 7:26 pm

For those who like to collect trophies for scambaiting, here's a doozy:
From: Mr. Tito Mboweni <mboweni_tito@treasury.gov.za> (yeah right.   )

Subject: REMINDER FROM THE OFFICE OF SOUTH AFRICAN MINISTER OF FINANCE.

Attention,

I write in respect of the fund brought to the department of National
Treasury from Reserve bank in your name.

From the detailed report contained in the payment file that accompanied
the fund, the fund was supposed to be transferred to you from Reserve
bank, but was not due to some reasons that were not specified in the
file.

The fund is 126,000,000 ZAR. Do you know about it?

This notification serves as the first and final notice for your fund to
be released to you and after 5 working days of this notification, if I
do not hear from you, we shall have no other option than to send the
fund over to government coffers as unclaimed.

You are required to re-confirm the following details, so that we can
commence your fund release process;

1, Your full name and age.
2, Your occupation.
3, Your cell phone number.

Yours Sincerely.

Tito Mboweni
Honorable Minister of Finance,
Republic of South Africa.
It actually originates from an email address: mboweni_tito@minister.com (SPF FAIL with IP 113.212.97.203, from a f..kwit near Gol Gol Rd, NSW, AUS).

The minister.com domain and its mail server should be sent moertoe because it is undoubtedly a long-time haven for scammers.

The grammar alone is a dead give-away.
Of late I have been receiving emails with Afrikaans names to them, "no subject" and saying "see attachment". I promptly delete those, most likely if one opens the "attachment" then these jokers get access to one`s mail list ?
Can someone who is tech smart give an answer to this ?

There are known operating system and application bugs, such as with adobe, outlook etc.
Some attachments can exploit these.
More often than not, it is an executable file that appears to be a photo or document, so people unwittingly open it and run malware.

This scheme is more believable than Hlaudi Motsoeneng and the SABC appointed him as CEO. So yes, there will be people falling for it! #-o
