Banking sector strike on Friday...

Unread post by SlowApproach » Mon Sep 23, 2019 12:30 pm

As much as 50,000 workers in the banking sector will be protesting against retrenchments on Friday.

"We will shut down systems in the banking industry," Kokela (Sasbo general secretary) said. He confirmed this means ATMs will also be affected, as well as any card transactions.
Personally, I despise the banks and their disinterested client support and "management", but this sounds like a threat of wilful sabotage to me. So, this strike could backfire badly. Causing the man in the street financial or transactional distress will get the employees absolutely zero sympathy.
Behind every angry woman is a man who has absolutely no idea what he did wrong.

You honestly think those okes have access to the systems that power the bank and that precautions haven't been taken?
I doubt anyone will notice, apart from those that actually go to branches because they aren't internet savvy.
It's a sign of the times.
Our banks have been slow to change and now they are being disrupted by the new digital banks and have to react.
It's been a long time coming, but the little bubble they have been living in is busy going pop.

Fact is no amount of striking is going to change the inevitable. Banking is changing and for the traditional banks to survive, digitisation and reduction of their cost base are key. With that will come retrenchments and as long as it is done within the framework of labor law, nothing is going to prevent it.
Shutting down systems is sabotage and will probably be dealt with accordingly. ATM's will be affected if SBV do not deliver cash to branches.
