Not really, SMSs have always had a limit of 160 characters, so rather a "souped down version", I would say, before the character count was increased to 280 in late 2017. At least direct messages allow a lot more, the limit was increased from just 140 to a "massive" 10,000 characters on 12 August 2015.

Edit: a bit of an echo here...

I used to be a huge advocate of Twitter - was an early adopter and have had an account for more than 10years. I initially found it useful and a source of logical comment. Later on I got a lot out of it and made lots of contacts with colleagues on other continents.

And then the masses joined. And the quality of content decreased. The amount of racism expressed (by both sides) and the toxicity and negativity grew exponentially.

So I went cold turkey on it. And I realised that the only times I wanted to tweet anything, it was negative. So I was part of the problem. Don’t miss it at all..

Like many social networks, the stupid rises to the top and overwhelms everything else.
YMMV.

Something Darren mentioned on page 1 is something I was also very surprised about one day. A few years ago I was researching an aircraft that was entered in the PTAR for the first time and I came across a Twitter post containing some photos of the same aircraft type, with some very explicit porn images mixed among the aircraft images in the same thread. Heaven knows what they were doing there, being a very foreign language post I had no idea what that was about. And I didn't have the time at that stage to try Google Translate either...
