It just entered a sudden and steep descent and a video shows it in a near vertical dive.

A layman's question: why does the airspeed decrease as the plane goes into the dive?

That video is horrific.

This kind of reminds me a bit of Silkairs 737 crash, sudden vertical plunge, most likely suicide in that case.

Aircraft don't just fall out of the sky during the cruise phase.

The ADS-B is showing displacement over the ground wrt time, in a steep dive the displacement will be less depending on the angle of the dive. A vertical descent should show almost zero ground speed even though the airspeed will be high.
