When I flew for Sterling Airways, there were some captains that had hit retirement age but stayed on as copilots. I have no idea though if they took a cut in salary. But they were very mentally geared up for it. I was a young-ish captain with a copilot much older with much more experience on some flights, but they never displayed any "I know more than you" attitude nor did they try to be an instructor and would often say "You're the captain, it's up to you". However I'm not sure this is the case here, it seems this guy was demoted so it does give plausibility to the "snapped" theory.

On Apr 20th 2022 the CAAC released a statement indicating, the preliminary report has been submitted to ICAO. The data restoration of the data of CVR and FDR is still in progress. The aircraft left assigned cruise altitude of 8900 meters at 14:20:55L. At 14:21:40L radar recorded the last position at 3380 meters altitude, speed over ground at 1010 kph at a heading of 117 degrees, the radar signal was lost at that point. The main wreckage was found in a puddle of 45 square meters and a depth of 2.7 meters at position N23.3238 E111.1123 and included horizontal stabilier, vertical tail, left and right engines, left and right wings, fuselage parts, cockpit parts as well as landing gear. Those recovered parts were transported to a warehouse for further analysis. Traces of fire were in the forest surrounding the crash site. The trailing edge of the right winglet was recovered about 12km from the main impact site. Flight and Cabin Crew qualification and certification was without flaw, the aircraft was airworthy with no deferred entries in the tech log, there was no hazardeous cargo on board. Ground based navigation facilities all operated normally, no dangerous weather was forecast for the area when the aircraft departed its cruising altitude. Radio communication with the aircraft was normal until 14:16L (the last radio communication).

All “4 corners” found at the crash site so no mid-air breakup. Except for the one winglet that probably got torn off in the dive. The cockpit voice recorder could hold the key to this mystery.

US officials who analysed data from the black box flight recorders found amid the wreckage said that deliberate input from the cockpit forced the Boeing 737 into its catastrophic dive. The authorities said that the pilots of the plane did not respond to repeated calls from air traffic controllers and nearby planes during the rapid descent.

Chairperson of the National Transportation Safety Board of the US, Jennifer Homendy, said on May 10 that board investigators and Boeing had travelled to China to assist the Chinese investigation. She said that the investigators had not found any safety issues that would require any urgent action.
