ZUBLJ GK1

Unread post by whisper »

Designed and built by the late Garth Kopke. Powered by Honda 1600 DOHC driving prop via HTD toothed belt. Under belly radiator ala P51. Very very sweet handling, fast aircraft. Stays with an RV6 :D Pics taken near Paradise Beach around 2001?? Flying pic taken by Peter vd Velden as I recall??

Love the look of this aircraft - reminds me a bit of the Mew Gull. Is it still flying? How successful was the Honda Conversion?
I seem to remember that you had one in a Citabria / Decathlon at one stage, Whisper?

Was at BaraGee for a few years but is now at Tedderfield. The owner did have some problems with the engine!

Yes, the GK1 (Baby Mustang) is now based at Tedderfield.
It’s taken me some time to get all the problems sorted out but she is now airworthy and has all her paperwork up to date. :D

I’ve flow her a few times and must admit it’s not the easiest plane to fly, you basically apply throttle, point it in the direction you want to go and hang on for dear life.  I’m finding the landings the most difficult to master as the landing speed on the reef varies between 80-85mph (anything less and she just sinks to the ground) over the fence …a 1km runway is just too short but I’m getting the hang of it. :) :)

Below are some photo’s taken over the last year…

Very interesting. After 10 years of waiting I’m the happy owner of ZU-BLJ.
Always loved the KR’s especially this one.
