This is a posting from the Africa Aviation forum that was made two years ago by one of the investigators who went to Russia for the original accident investigation report:
There is no need to do anything other than carefully read through all the evidence – there was a second aircraft (C9-BAA) in the same airspace and which obviously utilised the same navigational aids. The pilot in commend was Capt Marques, he states in his witness statement that he had the Radar, the NDB and the VOR all dead on the nose at 187 NM.

He was put under pressure by the Mozambican and Russian authorities to say that he was “deflected “ and that his flight path indicated the evidence of a rogue VOR; he refused to do this. Needless to say that, as the Radar and the NDB corroborated the VOR, this is a spurious allegation. Nonetheless, the Boeing 737 information was submitted by the Mozambicans to Mr Bernard Caiger, the Canadian FDR expert for independent analysis. Mr Caiger’s report is part of the Margo Commission report; it states categorically that no deviation in the track of C9-BAA could be detected.

Capt Marques reiterates his viewpoint in the book by the Mozambian journalist João M. Cabrita (2005) “The Death of Samora Machel”.

The questions that really need to be asked are:
Why did the crew of C9-CAA have their Radar on standby?
Why did they not use the NDB?
Why did they not use LM Radio which could be picked up almost anywhere in the region?

Because they believed that the electrical power had failed EVEN THOUGH the ATC was talking to them in the radio? Clearly fatigued and complacent they became disoriented and we have another CFIT.

It is the political impact of the accident and the foolish behaviour of Pik Botha that contaminated the integrity of the investigation.
Regards,

I have the crew as:

Captain Yuri Novodran, co-pilot Igor Kartamichev, navigator Andrei Kudriachov and radio operator Anatoli Choulipov.

Just another inaccuracy that needs checking.

Machel-ramp: Vlieëniers glo gemuilband
Nov 26 2008 07:23:57:807PM Beeld - (SA)
Erika Gibson
Live every day!

Yaaaawn, only DL is trying his level best to breathe fire into this dead horse. I have no doubt that HE had something suspious happen during his patrol of that night. That it had anything to do with the incident is doubtful (no disrespect DL).

Read the report(s0 many, mnay reports, files, submissions et al, PILOT ERROR, plain and simple, sad and very boring but true.

As far as I'm concerned this subject is dead and burried. No pun intended
