The Flightradar 24 interesting traffic thread

Unread post by shawndewet »

I have just discovered FlightRadar24.com. WOW!
Anyway, I just unexpectedly saw an arbitrary Jabiru flying around the Bapsfontein area. Does that imply that this Jabbi has ADS-B installed?
Also wondering to what extent this could have been used to track MH370?

ZU-IBE does training out of Rhino park, so you will often see it in that area. Many new NTCA have ADS-B installed.

Read the FAQs on the FlightRadar web site. Tracking is dependant on ground stations, so not much help (beyond the recorded tracks on ATC radar) in out of the way areas.

All the aircraft needs is a transponder with mode S. The antennas on the ground interrogate and receive on 1090 and 1060 Mhz.

Plain mode S does not show up on Flightradar.
Plain Mode S gives no position info, so cannot be plotted.

MH370 was tracked via ADS-B until the onboard unit was switched off inside the aircraft

Thought this was cool - UAE Air Force pilots flying their awesome PC-21's around the Empty Quarter. This was either Sunday or Monday - can't recall

Hey Snitch, can you help explain how come some military aircraft don't show and some do? For instance, in the screen shot above of the PC21's flying at Al Ain, there are about 20 other aircraft in the air as well, but not showing. They are variously PC7's, C172's,B206 and B407's. Is it FR24 not picking them up or is it to do with Mode S .... any ideas?

The owner of the unit has a choice to block the data on the various sites and a lot of military aircraft dont have them installed for safety reasons.
Hope that helps

In South Africa the equipment is illegal. :(
Probably the same in many other African countries.
Really hope you can get some in though.
