Unread post by edwoodza » Tue Nov 06, 2018 1:17 pm

Interesting. we all know SANPARKS dont like drones. but wow
https://www.sanparks.org/docs/tourism_t ... 8-2019.pdf
Check their rates

Helicopter aerial filming R5342 per day
Drone/RPAS filming R10683 per day

2x the cost for drone permissions.

How they justify that?

Looks like the drone fees are compensating for helicopter landing fees. So whether a drone or helicopter is used it will cost the same, assuming the that the helicopter will be based in Kruger for the shoot.

My guess is that it’s about creating a barrier to entry. Of course, creating a rule and enforcing it are very different things.

I disagree - the operators will know what they can and cannot do as far as disturbance goes, unlike koos and sipo that visit the park with their insect purchased from a chinaman at the mall - huge difference!!

OH it gets worse
Flying in Cape Town Table Mountain parks.
R10k permit per day
PLUS they want a % of what the client is billed.
Now thats crossing a line i think. How can that extortion even be legal?

Very supportive commentary there.... Cage, LowFlyingDuck, Rotor kop...

Lets not forget we are in a section of the community which is meant to support and promote the interests of Drones/UAV's and the operation thereof.

We are all keen for a good healthy debate so we can all learn each other's perspective on the situation and how to work together.

But your statements offer neither constructive value to anyone's life or to this section of the community...

Would love to know the logic here.

I worked with a client to build out a use case for them and put together and operation.

All initial pricing was looking really good for both them as well as an operator. I approached a number of ROCs in the area to work with them and build out this business.

Let me add, most of these ROCs are existing air ops companies that got an ROC, so they should be keen for the business.

Long story short, never went anywhere as I got the cold shoulder and lack of interest from ROCs.

Some time later found out one of them went to this client and tried working on the very same type of ops, then quoted the client about 85k per site per month to do less than a handful of short flights a week and would still not have covered the full extent of the service they were looking for when I engaged with them.

Going to be interesting to see how the industry is going to mold over the next couple of years.

Having said all this, have been following a few companies doing some very good things for UAV's in the country and for the industry as a whole.

Ever consider that the number of helicopter filming requests are relatively few (given the cost and planning involved) yet every man and his dog wants to come do some drone filming?

My opinion....

These costs should be doubled again to prevent every amateur drone owner to ever get access to our National Parks, any of them. It is enough to deal with the lawlessness of people using the roads in the parks, please forbid the day the Parks are open for people to fly around with drones.

I will go further to say that the persons who can afford these fees should also pay for the Game Warden that accompanies them everyday to make sure they stick to the rules and not intrude or annoy the Fauna and Avifauna. In my opinion drones in National Parks should be used only for Documentaries by Professional Videographers with at least one proper televised documentary behind their names. These documentaries, if allowed, should also be limited to even further reduce intrusiveness into the last "natural habitat" of our indigenous Fauna and Avifauna. We are guests in their house and the Parks-board and wardens their protectors. Our National Parks are conservation areas, not every mans' playground and film studio. It is the last place left for these animals to exist in a near natural habitat.

That all said I support the views and out look of Cage, LowFlyingDuck and Rotor kop when it comes to our National Parks and drones. One can only support a cause if one can be convinced of its benefits. There were 1 659 793 visitors through the gates in 2014/15 which averages at 4646 per day. If 5% had drones there would be 232 drones potentially irritating the #### out of everybody. I personally fully support the banning of these things from our National Parks.

But that is just me and my opinion.
