Unread post by AgustaGuy » Sun Apr 28, 2019 7:20 pm

Sitting in the house hearing bangs I go out to hear what it can be? Look up and see the left hand engine of Zim Air 767 blowing flames... see the returning to OR now. Scary to see

Air Zim emergency out of ORT

Unread post by Sideslip » Sun Apr 28, 2019 7:27 pm

My area crimewatch Whatsapp group just went berserk as people heard an explosion. Turns out it’s a air Zim 767 outbound from ORT with motor issues. Some say motor was on fire.

I presume they will dump fuel and return. I hope all goes well.

My friend in Kempton also saw it. He’s now at cruising altitude and heading to Harare. Another friend heard on 126.7 captain saying ops normal. Yoh.

Saw him passing overhead and climbing to cruise. Only one engine?

Seems they are making their way home okay. I see they leveled off at 9000ft after take-off and then started the climb again. Maybe "sorted" the issue?

- OPS normal?
What are the procedures in such an event. Will be interesting to hear from Airline pilots.

Turns out another Airzim aircraft ingested some birds in the left engine coming out of Bulawayo yesterday. I would place a good bet its the same one today.

My take, Compressor stall on departure they then turned onto the downwind, levelled off at 9000ft to run the checklist, Eng Lim/Surge/Stall.
Engine back to normal with no abnormal indications, continue the flight to destination.

Thats pretty much what I saw. By the time it turned downwind it had stopped barking.

The 767 that continued on to Harare was UM303.
UM 462 also had an issue this evening and they have returned to FAOR according to a FB posting below:

UPDATE: There's been confusion between two flights - UM462 and UM303. The former has had to land at OR Tambo shortly after take-off, whereas UM303 was given the green-light to continue. We've got all the latest developments here.
