Later, the GCAA said, "The four-seat plane crashed while on a mission to calibrate terrestrial navigation systems at the airport, with all crew members, three British, and a South African, killed.

Do you know who it is, Guy? I am rather fearful that I know who it is. Every part of me is hoping that it isn't.

Very bad news. Very capable aircraft.
What could have gone wrong?

Speculation mode ON: Calibrating an ILS requires quite heavy maneuvering to box the glideslope. Not impossible to have power surge and then stall spin. It would be interesting to see a pic of the wreck as regards forward speed.

Ahead of the D62 a A350 landed.......
Althou not usualy a wake issue during our summer months wake turbulence don't dissapate so quickly
and sits around in a "ball" for much longer. I wont be surprised if they did a quick circuit the got cough in this.
I dont think its got something to do with the ILS itself as the crew have been doing this for numerous years in the
UAE as they have a contract with all the airports in the area to do the ILS calibration.

Sounds plausible, especially if they came from crosswind onto the localizer to intercept the glideslope from below. The wake spreads and descends - putting it right in their path.

Edit: see
https://www.news24.com/SouthAfrica/News ... h-20190517

Accident site seems to be on downwind, not along the ILS.

Why would they have four up for ILS calibration?

Well AFAIK - you need at least 3: one to fly - one to look outside and one to monitor the equipment in the back.

METAR OMDB 151500Z 22004KT 200V280 CAVOK 34/10 Q1004 NOSIG=
Makes a Density Altitude of 2706 ft, You can also still encounter wake on Downwind, especially if a Heavy flies over the top of you and that wake drifts down into your path.

With the Density Altitude and heat plus relatively low wind speed the wakes take longer to dissipate.
ok now what do we do
