Hacked Showmax account

Anybody having this problem with Showmax ?

I have been double billed for several months.

Sent them 1 email, no response.


Sent another email, no response.

Got hold of them on their chat connection. Turns out some stranger, with a different email address to mine (obviously), has been paying his account using my card details. Long online chat later, they promise to cancel that account, but will not refund me.

This month, bang bang again, the payment goes through twice !!!

Another long online chat, only to find out that somebody else is now using my credit card details to pay their account. Again, Showmax have cancelled the other account, but refuse to refund me. They say that this person must have gotten hold of my details and the one-time-pin. Like, how !!??

I have stopped the credit card. But I cannot be the only Showmax subscriber who is getting creamed like this. Anybody else having this problem ? Any advise on what I should do ?

log a fraud request with the bank, they will refund you.

This. I've recently been a victim of fraud and they start small. Cancel that credit card and get a new one before they start spending big amounts.

This is the info they say they keep on every account - hold them accountable to it... apply your mind.

Notify your bank of illegal/unauthorized transaction on your card, and they will cancel the card and issue a new one. They will do their own fraud investigation. That way the perp who probably cloned your card is buggered and so is showmax, until they refund you. :idea:

Thanks all.

This is not card cloning - this is people being able to add their account to your payment details. In order to do that they need access to a OTP (one-time-pin).

Showmax say it isn't them. But I have not received any OTP's on my phone, so clearly they have somebody on the inside diverting the authorization. I have stopped my card, and have to write a dispute to ABSA to get a refund (as its was 'authorized' use of my card, and not cloning or card theft), and then ABSA will investigate through their fraud department.

If I have been hit twice in quick succession, surely I can't be the only one, right ?

Just to follow up:

Showmax promised to credit me for the month and for the last guy who hacked my account.

Double payment went through my account (AGAIN !!!) but were rejected because I had stopped the card.

Over the weekend my Showmax account was terminated.

Easy solution...

Any company or website, able to "manually" process a card, i.e processing a transaction without the physical card being present, has to sign a very lengthy merchant agreement.

Rules relating to all manual transactions are the same, regardless of whether it is a Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Dinersclub, etc. card.

These rules state that if the card is not present, a copy of the front and back of the card, as well as a copy of the owner's ID needs to be obtained. Further to this, the customer has to sign a credit card authorisation form.

These rules apply to everyone from Takealot, to Protea Hotels, to Kulula and also Showmax.

They don't ask for this because of the hassle. They gamble, hoping that no one asks for what is called a "charge back".

I have faced this problem many times. Someone makes a purchase on my website, receives the goods or service (most likely the person who stole the card), and then a week after "delivery" I get an email from the bank stating that a charge back has been requested and that I have 3 days to prove that I obtained what I mentioned above.

When I can't, the money is withdrawn by the bank and refunded to the owner.

I have also had instances where someone physically swiped a card, enters the pin, the transaction is approved and the slip reads something in the line of "no signature required".

A few days pass and an email comes through requesting the signed copy of the receipt. Even through the bank's speedpoint printout says that no signature is required, the merchant agreement states that it is always required and should always be compared to the signature on the card.

Three days later the money is reversed.

You pay a fixed monthly fee for your card in exchange for security and piece of mind.

The solution: call the bank and demand a charge back. They have an obligation to refund everything if Showmax cannot prove that it was you who authorised the transaction.

You'll have your refund in 3 days. If not, contact the merchant, e.g Visa or Mastercard and report the bank.

They'll then receive a hefty fine for non-compliance.

My wife had the same issue with someone charging Netflix using her card. Don't know how they got the details, but it seems if they have the card number and CCV number they can do it.
Needless to say, she blocked the card and is in the process of reclaiming.
The sky is not the limit....
