Um, for once I am in slight disagreement with the general sentiment on this.

From what I understand is that SAA has separated their training facility to have its own ATO. This, I hear, is to allow them to offer training solutions to pilots from other countries whereby in the past they could only do in-house training. It makes sense as there is a lot of training equipement and personel at their disposal. The training captain hasnt changed either, by the way...

Now as for the person's name who appears at the top of the ATO certificate, its much the same that a CEO of an airline might not even hold an ALTP but has airline management experience instead. If the name is used to attract business to the training ATO, then win for them.

117, one of the most challenging aspects of an instructors job is the handling of marginal students. Future incidents always bring scrutiny back to the training records. Now add external pressure to achieve a corporate outcome and the challenge becomes exponentially more difficult. There could be pressure to pass students from a client airline?

If the head of the organization prioritises the said corporate mission, the organizational culture may lean away from maintaining the highest standards. Let’s hope that Vusi stands firm as a gatekeeper for the highest standards. Time will tell

It’s all moot in my humble opinion.

Even the best personal for all possible post holders in the company couldn’t drag SAA out of the mess it’s in. The time for that was years ago. It’s too far gone. So even if they employed competent personnel, it’s besides the point, it would just be cushioning the inevitable loss anyway.

The company should not exist in the first place.

I was waiting to board a flight a couple of weeks ago out of FAOR when I noticed a grey beard pilot accompanied by a younger male African pilot going through to catch a bus to whatever aeroplane they were going to fly. I didn’t give it a second thought.

After boarding our bus to take us to our flight, we passed an SAA aeroplane parked at the gate. After looking up at the cockpit I was surprised to see the grey beard in the right seat and the younger African man in the left.

After being in the airlines myself, this type of scenario would be highly unusual, just based on the fact that when you see two pilots board an aeroplane in the airline environment, and especially when you look at the long road to command at SAA that has always been the case, the grey beard will almost always be in the left seat.

Just incase it didn’t cross your mind, people of all colours get grey hair. In this case though, the grey beard was of pale complexion.

So we have all heard about the demotions that have happened at SAA based on race for those that chose to stick around or were offered to stick around and accepted. But after seeing it in front of me, the feeling of injustice was just exasperated in my eyes.

Of course I could be way out of line and not be aware of a plausible scenario for this. I do however doubt it and believe I witnessed the travesty we have all heard about in the flesh.

I believe these former captains carry themselves on the flight deck with the upmost professionalism, but we are all human. They may not show it in the flight deck, but I would find it hard to believe that these pilots don’t feel a deep feeling of resentment and kudos to them for keeping it professional.

To work for many years to earn a spot in the left seat, and then be forced to give it up because of your demographic, but stay because you need a salary must be a tough pill to swallow.

I’m sure these former captains have no pride left in the company that they were once proud to be associated with and would jump at the chance to be with a company who wants them based on their vast experience.

If they did jump, they would almost certainly enter as first officers. (Some people do get direct entry Captain positions) But they would take comfort in the fact that it is because of seniority and experience in that new airline and not because of the colour of their skin. Especially because they came from an airline where that was always the case and had to climb that ladder themselves to have the privilege and huge responsibility of being in the left seat of an airliner.

They would know their captain, male or female, younger or older, white or of colour, baseball cap or not, is there because they earned it, the resentment level would be well degraded, the CRM and company atmosphere among the employees would be far better suited for a safe and enjoyable company to work for.
