Airstrip near Tiger Canyon?

Unread post by RDT » Wed May 18, 2022 4:27 pm

Hi
Anyone know of a airstrip near Tiger Canyon in the Free State, where i can land and leave my plane for 2 nights. I see Philippolis have a strip, but there is nothing, so probably not safe leaving it there?

thx

Hi RDT.

FYI I have a trip nearby in June and the local farmer advised that Phillipolos airstrip is in shocking condition and theft out of aircraft is definitely a concern. He advised against landing there. His lodge busses people in from Bloem if they fly in.

Perhaps there are smaller private strips nearby but I haven’t found any that can accommodate “bigger aircraft” (We were planning on a PC12).

Hope that helps!

Gariep dam( fahv) is surely an option? Relatively secure, and there is fuel there if you need( well, that was a month ago, situation may have changed regarding fuel)

I also recommend Gariep. Although Hunters Moon might seem to be a good option it is a longer drive to Tiger Canyon than from Gariep. The PC12 should be safe at Gariep with the local guard there as Hunters Moon warns that Rhino might be on or near the airfield.
