That ain't no Tiger Moth, Frans - that there's a Gypsy Moth. Notice the engine is the right way up, while a Tiger has the cylinders pointing down.

But what a magnificent clip.

Oom Jim is right, Frans; but he is remiss in not pointing out to you that this is the enhanced model -- the Gypsy Moth GT with vastly improved endurance. One moment over the Athi Plains, then Longonot, the Serengeti, Lake Manyara and then Mount Kenya! 8) :P

Thread drift...... I miss sipping on a cold Tusker or White cap at the Aeroclub watching the Buffs and Twotters coming back from Loki...and then the impromptu "pizzup" that ensued. Fun times.

I did work in the Mara for a few years a couple of years ago and enjoyed the indeed very active Aeroclub facilities. Humble overnight accomodation, splendid big breakfasts and excellent social activity over a couple or 2 Tuskers. All right next to the very active airside and runway. Legendary spot steeped in history and nostalgia

Anybody read Beryl Markham's 'West with the Night' ?

Probably one of the funniest and most well written books ever. Even impressed Earnest Hemingway.

Interesting side note in accident report # 201267 , ASN Aviation Safety Network
NOTE: The DH.60 Moth with the registration G-AAMT, which appears in the 1985 film "Out of Africa" is NOT this aircraft, but another DH.60 Moth, an American-built aircraft (c/no 86, which was registered as N585M, and later as G-AAMY - the latter being originally reserved for a De Havilland-built DH.60X Moth in September 1930, but was not taken up)
https://aviation-safety.net/wikibase/201267
If in doubt, change it.

You lived in Kenya for a while didn't you, Jim ?

Did you ever meet her while she lived at Wilson Airport ?

Sadly not Richard. Although we may have been at the club at the same time - she was nearly 40 years older than me so we wouldn't have been in the same crowd,

Yep I was born there and moved to SA when I was in my early 20s.

Come on, Richard, give Jim a chance: he ain't <that> old, mate! She died already back in 1986.

By the way, she trained racehorses for the mother of my best friend. Also (I hate to cast aspersion): there <is> some question as to whether or not she was capable of writing those (two) books herself, without assistance...just saying...(she had little formal education, remember). Nevertheless, I also loved her books.

PS: I see that her other book <was> written with another writer!

I read a biography written about her. She certainly used license to reconstruct events to create a very beautifully crafted, funny and incredible story (she wrote the book as a series of stories from various parts of her life).

I don't see how anybody would have (or could have) ghost written it, the book fell into complete obscurity, something that would not have happened had a third party had an economic interest in the project (the book was first published during WW2 and was thus buried, whereas 'Out Of Africa', published in 1937, had already reached the wider public's imagination).

Also, her actions and accomplishments lend credence to her being a woman of extraordinary skill and intelligence. And she was famously acerbic - a trait evident in her writing.
