Should they not first go hat in hand to the 1000's of staff they have laid off before importing staff?, pretty sure there are many cabin crew and pilots (of a lighter skin tone) which are maybe a little older but have the expertise so "needed" by the airline.

That's like saying the large SA auditing firms should rather employ the thousands of qualified SA workers without jobs rather than the multitude of foreign African country candidates that help their BEE scores.
Or Eskom should re-employ retrenched engineers
Not gonna happen under current rules

OK, see you point regarding BEE, however should BEE protect South African workers (of all races) against importing people of colour from neighboering countries to satisfy BEE targets, that is just crazy, but you cant discount this ANC government from perpetuating these sort of situations.

So its better to import someone of colour with experience rather than giving an unemployed South African (all races) with experience in said airline a second stint?

Not wanting to step on anyones toes here.

Maybe SAA staff are difficult and a burden on the company? (Strikes, high sick rate, unions)

I also know that a lot of former SAA guys have gone to the ME and taking their skills with them. (And it is not only pale faces)

I can't wrap my head around the fact that ZA has incredible high unemployment rate but also a critical skills shortage.

Guess 30 years of terrible economic and labour policys are coming back to bite ZA hard.
