Again we are celebrating mediocrity, start up a network like Eithiopian or Emirates - that’s something to celebrate not something that was done decades ago by essentially the same company.

I highly doubt SAA can or will start a network like ET or EK. It's not what they're planning to do.Flaps Up1 wrote: ↑Sat May 11, 2024 1:25 pm As Jim said, so what? Unless they were surprised they actually made it.

Personally I think that any airline starting (or restarting) flights to a particular destination, especially internationally, is always an achievement, but I can see why people wouldn't necessarily care, especially when it comes to SAA.

Re: SAA after Business rescue
I wasn’t suggesting they start a network like EK, they don’t and never will have the capability or the need. My comment was aimed at what would warrant the continuous celebrations they have for events that are merely a fart in the wind (compared to what SAA was capable of) and achieved on the back of the taxpayer. Privatize 100%, stand on your own two feet and fly long haul - yeah then we can talk. Not this, especially with such infamous individuals on the flight deck in a klapped out 340.Airplaneguy9 wrote: ↑Sat May 11, 2024 3:56 pmI highly doubt SAA can or will start a network like ET or EK. Re: SAA after Business rescue
While I understand where you are coming from. A lot of airlines celebrate things they done before. Yet EK celebrated their first A380 flight to CDG during COVID. So did Lufthansa when they started A380 ops again. It is called marketing and making sure the flight public knows that "Hey we are back to destination X or we are flying again with aircraft x"Flaps Up1 wrote: ↑Sat May 11, 2024 6:52 pmI wasn’t suggesting they start a network like EK, they don’t and never will have the capability or the need. Re: SAA after Business rescue
I thought there was going to be a future for SAA V2, the original V2 which meant stepping towards privatization, but honestly, I find it extremely difficult to get excited about celebration flights or any other achievement when I know the PAYE deducted from my income is supplementing the airline.
I have such a negative outlook to SAA, that I honestly wouldn't fly on SAA, under any circumstances.
It needs to operate self-sufficiently, without government intervention.

Re: SAA after Business rescue
I see a Pacific Airlines, still in full colours and titles, A320 registered 2-KMOL belonging to China Aircraft Leasing Company landed at JNB yesterday afternoon. Wonder if it's for SAA?

While I understand your outlook. The fact remains that SAA is there and it operates. Unless the current government has some kind of epiphany or we get a new government with 2 braincells instead of 1 SAA will unfortunately stay. One can only hope they will shut down again and then this Apartheid dinosaur will stay dead.Jasondn78 wrote: ↑Sun May 12, 2024 8:09 pm I thought there was going to be a future for SAA V2, the original V2 which meant stepping towards privatization, but honestly, I find it extremely difficult to get excited about celebration flights or any other achievement when I know the PAYE deducted from my income is supplementing the airline.

Re: SAA after Business rescue
Has anyone else smirked at the irony of their re-started Perth flights? You create a situation in your own country so that a large proportion of the mobile class moves overseas and many of them end up in Perth. You then specificly target that as a route because there is so much traffic to and fro.Joker11 wrote: ↑Mon May 13, 2024 1:29 pmWhile I understand your outlook. BUSINESS
SAA adds three planes to its fleet
Staff Writer
·14 May 2024
South Africa’s embattled national airline SAA has taken delivery of three aircraft from China Aircraft Leasing Group (CALC).
The 2016-vintage A320CEO aircraft were part of Vietnamese airline Pacific Airlines’ fleet before being redelivered to SAA, the group said.
“By initiating a partnership with South Africa’s flag carrier as a new client, the delivery showcases CALC’s dedication to broadening its presence across the African continent and illustrates a globalised business, especially within the southern hemisphere,” it said.

Re: SAA after Business rescue
The three aircraft are:
- 2-KMOL, ex-VN-A565
- 2-BINH, ex-VN-A564
- 2-CALC, ex-VN-A577
All three are A320-232s (IAE-powered), and will be the first ever SAA A320s with sharklets.
I wonder if they'll get the updated A350-style billboard logo titles.

Well you could say the same about airlines serving the Middle East from Pakistan, India and the Philippines.dollar wrote: ↑Tue May 14, 2024 10:24 amHas anyone else smirked at the irony of their re-started Perth flights?
