Top UN court orders Israel to stop Rafah offensive

EPA Judge Nawaf Salam delivering ruling in ICJEPA
The UN's top court, the International Court of Justice (ICJ), has issued a dramatic ruling, ordering Israel to "immediately halt its military offensive in Rafah".
It acted in support of a South African application last week which sought a number of measures against Israel, accusing it of stepping up what it says is a genocide.
Presiding judge Nawaf Salam said the situation in Gaza had deteriorated since the court last ordered Israel to take steps to improve it.
Israel has vehemently denied the allegation and signalled it would ignore any order to halt its operation.
Reading the court's ruling on Friday, Nawaf Salam said "Israel must immediately halt its military offensive, and any other action in the Rafah Governorate" which could bring about "the physical destruction" of the Palestinians - alluding to what constitutes genocide under international law.
Israel, he added, must also allow unimpeded access to Gaza to any UN body investigating allegations of genocide.
The ruling also reiterated a requirement for Israel to enable "unhindered provision at scale" of basic services and humanitarian aid for Gaza.
"The humanitarian situation [in Gaza] is now to be characterised as disastrous," the ruling said.
Israel rejected the court's ruling and said its military offensive in Gaza was in line with international law.
"Israel has not and will not carry out military operations in the Rafah area that create living conditions that could cause the destruction of the Palestinian civilian population, in whole or in part," National Security Adviser Tzachi Hanegbi said in a joint statement with the foreign ministry.
War cabinet minister Benny Gantz said Israel would continue its offensive "wherever and whenever necessary - including in Rafah".
Meanwhile, the Palestinian ambassador to the UN, Riyad Mansour, hailed the ruling and called for Israel to abide by it.
"We expect that resolutions of the ICJ be implemented without hesitation," he said. "That's mandatory. And Israel is party to the convention."

Is it though, or is that just the hysterical media putting their spin on things?

Israel has been told to cease activities in Rafah IF those actions could bring destruction on the palestinian arab people. As long as they allow food and medical assistance to the populace there, which they're doing AFAIK, they can continue to hunt and destroy hamas.

For anyone not paying attention, hamas are the target, not the palestinian population unless they allow hamas to hide under their skirts. This is the reason the operation is being carried out house to house on foot, at great risk to the troops involved. If the civpop were the target, it would be easier, safer and cheaper to just set up artillery camps around gaza and pound the entire place to rubble with no risk to Israeli lives.

There are more refined and nuanced legal definitions, but that's pretty much what it amounts to if one avoids falling into the media hysteria trap. The fact it makes the SA govt froth at the gusset is a bonus.

As an aside, the collateral damage ratio is close to 1:1, ie, one civpop to one hamas/pij/whatever fighter. That is lower than other recent conflicts and demonstrates to anyone who doesn't battle with joined up thinking that if this is meant to be a genocide, the Israelis are pretty crap at it. Other muslim (and other) countries killing off their own are much better at doing the job.

The expanded humanitarian area in Al-Mawasi (an area that now borders Rafah) which the IDF setup as a safe zone for Gazan civilians includes field hospitals, tents and increased amounts of food, water, medication and additional supplies. There are no shortages there.

Shortages that may be happening elsewhere is also not as result of short supply - but UNRWA failing to distribute aid in Gaza.

During this past week the IDF located and destroyed multi-barrel rocket launchers located in eastern Rafah along the Philadelphi Corridor, close to the border, many literally a stones throw from the border fence, 20m and less. The launchers were all aimed at Israel.

I suspect the South African government will count this as a win.....for now.

I don't think the ruling will change a thing on the ground in Palestine........BUT there will be a seismic change in attitide between South Africa and the global Jewish community in the West - I think that in itself will, in the long run, hurt the ANC / SA government more than they could ever imagine.....distancing the 'goose that lays the golden egg' is generally considered dumb.....the usual sub Saharan sympathetic funding lines will (and are) drying up quicker than they can say ABC....The IMF, World Bank etc etc all support the Israeli project and generally speaking mirror Western / US sentiment to this conflict.......SA will be relying more on the East for it's hand outs... this will speed that process up.

1 rocket alert so far in Israel today. Yesterday, there were 23 rocket alerts, and a total of 169 in the past week. Last night there were a couple along the Eastern border of Gaza; the rest were all in the North of Israel.

Since 7 October last year there have been 12,656 rocket alerts in Israel.

By 'alerts' do you mean actual ordanance fired, or just a warning on a potential/possible threat?

An alert goes off when a missile fired is inbound to a specific area. Its triggered by the IAF missile defense system. Its very rarely only one missile, its usually a barrage fired from one or more launchers - but the IAF keep the stats on each projectile fired - as each projectile is tracked to identify which Iron dome and the newer system must respond to. The same applies to "suicide" drones - which is essentially a flying bomb usually GPS guided.

yup, the Israelis also have a phone app for it - and then there is another more detailed source of the alerts and what it was.

Eylon keeps rebutting lies told about Israel by antisemites and ignoramuses, now as an independent. Because before he became a government spokesman, Eylon Levy participated in anti-government demonstrations, and unfortunately some in Israeli government circles didn't like that about his past. So now he is an independent still doing what he believes is right.

So now that the kangaroo court in crooked NYC found T$ guilty (no surprise) the current deep state is telling our puppets in crooked Ukraine to launch gifted US missiles deep into Russia, we’ll hell guess nuclear war just in time for election!

Meanwhile Isreal is doing Isreal BS

If the US just kept to itself and didn’t give people weapons the world would be a much nicer place

Huh?

People fighting wars is as old as time. US or no US.

I don’t recall us supplying weapons and instigating Hitler and Hirohito prior to WW2. Or to Europe prior to the Great War. Not sure what kind of weapons we supplied to the Houthi’s and Tutsi’s. Pretty sure we don’t produce machetes . While we are at it, let’s blame the US for the Spanish Civil War.

Pretty sure the warning Yugoslav factions/tribes were using kit from the Yugoslav military. Guessing most of their weaponry and ammo stockpiles came from the USSR and not the US.

It’s just easy to blame the US for all the worlds geopolitical problems. We are damned when we do help and damned if we don’t,
