Re: SACAA "Obesity protocol"
The plain BMI charts are too generic
You can be a 180cm 105kg bodybuilder with only 10% body fat and it basically says you are "obese"
Yet someone with very little muscle mass and a very high fat percentage will be in the "Normal" or just in the "Overweight" category

The international trend is that a vehicle drivers license is enough for a sport pilot licence. Flight medical folks, mostly medical doctors endorse the killjoy red tape. Docs see your patients and advise them. See your psychologist for your know it all need to control over others. Spare us your diabetes smoking and other diatribes.

The BMI index is a height vs mass formula. Therefor vertically challenged people must all be skinny guys, no so in reality.
My BMI is 29 tending to obese according to the chart but my GP and cardiologist don't consider me to be DIK

Re: SACAA "Obesity protocol"
Rotor Kop, what is the update on your obesity? I am a new pilot who started my training at age 50 earlier this year. After passing all my medicals the CAA came back with the "obese protocol" <<moderated - language>>. So now I am grounded because I am a bit overweight.

Sent you a PM. I have not given this bull any more thought until the SACAA tries to pull my licence. Then we will see what discrimination in legal terms isRynok wrote: ↑Thu Oct 05, 2023 8:51 am Rotor Kop, what is the update on your obesity? Re: SACAA "Obesity protocol"
BMI is BS. I have been doing bodybuilding / powerlifting since high school. Now 49 and still training on and off at times I still carry a lot of muscle mass although a bit "undercover" now. I will not mention my BMI here but my doctor agrees BMI is indeed a farce with many people. Not everybody can be long and lean or short and lean. Many short people have a larger bone structure / broader hips and shoulders.

Re: SACAA "Obesity protocol"
I haven’t posted on here for years, but this is a topic close to heart. I know there are a lot of airline captains that reside on this forum, for their sake I will post a simple comparison, Emirates vs Qatar, who has the most serious incidents/accidents?
The sharp ones have already realised what I’m talking about, for the rest, Emirates has a bmi limit of 30, Qatar does not.
At the end of the day, the only thing a passenger should care about is whether the pilots are well trained, skilled, competent and have the correct temperament to handle stress.
The rest is noise.
Pozzi,
A320 captain.

Re: SACAA "Obesity protocol"
And lastly, I was told personally by a few very well know members of this forum, I have “no chance” in aviation because I was/am the fat guy. To all of you who said that, just rest in peace knowing you were wrong, if this were a face to face conversation I would say that in words that are not allowed in public.
