I use SkyDemon (last two years)
- it’s an all in one, I can do everything on my iPad plan and fly
- You can also connect it to ms flight simulator

I used EasyPlan before, a great feature they have is the ability of assigning abeam waypoints which SkyDemon can’t do(or I haven’t figured it out yet)

I have heard good things about Garmin Pilot, I understand you have the ability to purchase Jep charts,at an eye watering price, for IFR flying.

As a quick update to my previous post:

My Skydemon subscription expired this month and I thought I would try Garmin Pilot out.
You can get a 30 day trial but it is for the US so not very useful.

After shelling out the cash for the SA database and opening the app, I was a little disappointed.

The pros:
-User interface looks great and is easy to navigate
-The VFR map shows the airspace clearly, you can add overlays such as terrain, radar, wx etc
-Building a flight plan is fairly straight forward
-Sectionals are available, but you cant overlay the VFR map over the sectional

The Cons:
-Some small airfields are not there eg FABS, FAPY (Presume this is a registered vs a licensed and AIC 014-2014 issue) - This could also be user error but for the life of me i could not find a setting for these airfields.
-VFR reporting points are not there
-Could not find the special rules frequency by clicking on the area, shows FIS and FAJA

I think with a Jepp subscription this would be a great tool for IFR flying and if you have Garmin flight deck the ability to sync is great, but you would need to build out the VFR reporting points database by yourself to be meaningful for VFR flight planning.

I have gone back to Skydemon

Foreflight hands down

I also use it for my log, store tons of docs in it, etc

I think it’s lapped all the other apps a few times over

Have Foreflight fixed their South African database yet? I used it a couple of years ago and unless you are flying IFR or only flying to major airports it can be missing a lot of information. Even with the additional "local" database installed.

In terms of features it is far ahead of the competitors but you need to pay quite a bit more for the advanced features. This also makes it very complex to use, lots of knobs to twiddle. ForeFlight are also quite good at spamming you once you sign up, which can get a bit much when you don't need all the advanced features.

If you want to fly to smaller airfields in Southern Africa then EasyCockpit is what you need. It has a lot of information you won't get anywhere else. The software needs improvement but the data is unmatched.

Personally I use AirNav pro - because it was good enough at the time and I have not found a compelling reason to learn something else. It does what I need.

If I could get ForeFlight with the EasyCockpit database then it would be the best of both worlds and I would probably switch.

OzRunway is working nicely for me. I like the aeronautical charts they have and you can switch the charts, and is only (59/yr) approximately R1062 per year.
