Re: Today's Wazzit!
Few years ago I saw a 210 kit that was available in Kitplanes. Maybe someone actually built one. I can't remember what the specs were or what exactly it looked like.

Re: Today's Wazzit!
The airplane I posted is a prototype, designed as a possible replacement for the CIA’s stealth observation airplane based on s Schweitzer sailplane the Lockheed YO-3 Quiet Star.
I doubt anyone will get what it is, so I’ll end the pain now.
It is a Nighthawk QS3, and I was blessed to see her maiden flight right here in my hometown of Bend, Oregon - KBDN. Website below. It is a remarkable airplane with two engines. One is turbo diesel, and the other a small jet housed in the rear fuselage if it’s needed in an emergency. The crew it one behind the other……

Interesting aircraft. Do you have any idea what turbo diesel engine they used?Mike Wissing wrote: Sun Dec 01, 2024 8:38 pm The airplane I posted is a prototype, designed as a possible replacement for the CIA’s stealth observation airplane based on s Schweitzer sailplane the Lockheed YO-3 Quiet Star.

According to the spec list on their website, it's the Safran SR305-260E, 260 HP.Fransw wrote: Tue Dec 03, 2024 5:41 am Interesting aircraft. Do you have any idea what turbo diesel engine they used?

If you don't gear up your brain before takeoff, you'll probably gear up your airplane on landing.

Re: Today's Wazzit!
As you say Mike - This aircraft had its origins in a converted Schweizer 232 sailplane that the US used to patrol the Mekong river at night in the latter part of the Vietnam War.
It was said to be inaudible @ 100 metres above the river .
I think it had a Lycoming motor suitably muffled driving a large 6 blade wooden propeller on a pylon .
I think the SAAF acquired the one and only Schweizer 232 in South Africa during the 70s in a bid to create our own stealth patrol , however I don't know what happened to it .
I flew the 232 before it went missing .

What is not known is who the manufacturer was.
14 of these microlights were registered on the SA Register during the early 80's so its not a one off

Horrid little thing - looked the same before or after the accident which was always a certainty .

Re: Today's Wazzit!
I guess this is what you get when a shipbuilding company starts building aircraft, they have come up with some VERY weird designs during WW II. They also built thousands of aircraft for other companies. This one is the Blohm & Voss BV P.111, below you can see how very weird the layout was...
