Stearman talls after takeoff

Surely the correct recovery action could have had a better outcome?

Hard to believe that he was doing 80mph. Think he stalled it with a too high AOA after lift off.

The guys last flight review was Sept 2022, which means he was not current. 🙄
The insurance company is not going to love him.

That gear is very strong……

Looks to me like a botched approach?

The Stearman’s stall characteristics are very benign, you really have to abuse her to get her to fully let go. The approach to stall is also very gentle with ample warning and mild mannered buffet.

With what Mike says regarding his last flight review, the accident ties in with the trend of not being the actual loss of desired aircraft state (the CRM term), but the bad handling of the recovery leading to the crash. Him being so far out of recency that he botched the approach, got the aircraft in an undesirable aircraft state and failed to execute the correct maneuver to rectify it.

If the trees were a little further from the runway he might have had a second go, I guess. Definitely fell behind the drag curve on that approach though..

The pilot seems to imply that the ASI was broken and only showing 80Mph consistently.
Would a one way valve in the Pitot system create the situation where the ASI would show max speed attained by allowing pressure to build and not release?
Could some debris in the pitot system create a one way valve by being pushed in and then getting stuck there, not releasing the pressure?
Would be interested to hear if anyone has suffered from a faulty ASI and what caused it, regards Karl

If the ASI was broken, surely the ROD and AOA should have given ample warning that the indicated airspeed he saw was not correct.

My thought's as well Karl. I think it most unlikely that aircraft was doing 80.

Indeed a bug in the pitot could have blocked it completely when it was doing 80.

A 24 000 hour pilot can't feel when his aerie is dangerously slow and hanging on its prop ?

Come on, does he even look at the ASI ?

Ricardo - a guy doesn't get that number of hours from flying PCs. He's an airline pilot. And from the video, if he could feel he was dangerously slow why didn't he do anything about it? Lower the nose or increase power - or both.

Another observation: if he'd maintained proper runway heading, he'd have had a chance at landing on the runway (airstrip), wouldn't he?
