True, but more money than the average Visa card, at least mine by factor of much!

No skills to go to space nowadays... purely an automated event. In the '60's to '80's, the guys really needed to understand the physics, the rocket, mechanics and all behind it and be able to take manual control at any time. Take Apollo 13, but it's not the only example where the crew and ground techs worked together to save the day... Sorry, but with this, you have money, go as passenger to a great height and land; I think navigating cross country using a VFR map in any aircraft, say a 172, is a much greater achievement...

They are as much of an astronaut as I am being a pilot, having paid to fly on an airliner!

That is quite well said!

However, not all crew on e.g. Apollo or the Shuttle was the pilot, but they all had their quite specialised roles, functions and training... Even Mark Shuttleworth had months of training, and conducted several experiments during his 10 day stint in space.

https://www.theguardian.com/science/200 ... xploration
Mr Shuttleworth has undergone more than eight months of full-time training and will participate fully in the mission, taking responsibility for radio and life support systems in the Soyuz capsule.
That is the difference, commitment, skill and training.

Passengers flying on airliners at the rise of the then glamorous jet era, were called The Jetsetters. Passengers on the now equally glamorous Space flights should be called Starsetters? Or Astrosetters? :?
