I tell you know that much of it came from Botswana/northern Namibia. Elephants shot indiscriminately by government ministers and their senior army officer buddies. Makes me want to puke.
DL,

I think the ivory from elephants shot by crazed, gunhappy SADF rank has long been sold, and has funded all sorts of things such as beach houses and shitty little lapas and living room bars. Much of Angola's ivory was used by Savimbi to fund his dirty war. Jan Breytenbach wrote a novel about it called The Plunderers - it was this clash that lead to his fall from grace with the SADF's top brass.

The ivory up for sale is - allegedly :? - from elephant culls, but there must be very much that has been confiscated from poachers. And this raises a huge ethical issue about the ivory trade. But we knew that already ...

Kudu

PS 80 rhino poached in SA this year. The Chinese are getting richer, they have fingers all over Africa now, and rhino horn is a great prize

Then even those are not qualified aircraft investigators... the end.

PS I can highly recommend breakfast at FASH ....very yum. :D
I see the airforce types still suffer under the misconception that they were the only intelligent participants in the SADF - accidental indeed. Why would anybody deploy troops at huge expense into an area that is of no military significance under the circumstances I describe. Are you telling me that I imagined all this along with around 30 troops. The arrogance of it... :x :x :x :x :x

In all my years in the military I have never been deployed under more mysterious and strange circumstances. I am not presuming to know anything about false beacons etc, I think thats BS, but please do not question something that you were not party to.
I was not always this sarcastic.

It took me years of dealing with A-holes to get this good at it...

What gives you the right to TELL me I may not question something? Inquisitiveness = arrogance? ...up yer's mate.

Why don't you explain all the apparent MYSTERIOUS stuff you experienced FIRST HAND clearly then

Thanks... you seem to KNOW what happened.... or DON"T you really know. If you don't know, well ...what's all the going around in circles about?

Otherwise do us a favour and enlighten us so called "only intelligent participants" to the FACTS....just what are some of us apparently thinking you imagined?

Darrell, please excuse my ignorance of these sensitive and delicate old military matters, but I am learning and trying to understand!

You say that you and your deployment of troops were from the "RLI". What unit/regiment would that have been?

I would hazard a guess that its the same group who were out in the veld on the night the Helderberg, Concorde and Lockerbie aircraft came down too.

Heard that it stood for " Remove Leader Inflight " - but there were no leaders on the other flights, just on the Moz one.

For those that may be wondering Snoopy is not referring to many Cape Town Internationals (http://www.airports.co.za/home.asp?pid=229) but is using the plural of this word: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fact

Aw F@k, this is never going to end... The RLI was the Rhodesian Light Infantry, I have no idea what the relevence is here. If someone from an infantry batallion was deployed in the Nelspruit/Komatipoort area it would have been from 7 SAI (South African Infantry) based at Phalaborwa or 4 SAI at Middelburg. Then there were commando units in the area (Citizen force), the local Military intelligence unit at Nelspruit whom only had a data collection role. 5 Recce (Recon regiment) was also based at Phalaborwa but would hardly get involved in an internal matter. By law the SADF never had any internal mandate. They could only be deployed within the SA borders in a support role to the SA Police or to patrol a Border. Military int. (CSI) only had a mandate to collect information and act on it outside the borders of the country. My question is "If you wanted to crash an a/c (even if you could) why would you embarass your own govt by doing it in your own country?"
I am not saying bad things didn't happen and that there were no dirty tricks, (Of course there was) Thats why Eugene De Kock from C1 SAP is behind bars. I know Wouter Basson, Lothar Neethling, Basie Smit and others (the list goes on and on) were resourceful but crashing a plane? C'mon boys that is just a bridge too far.
