None of them on the register anymore, unfortunately...

If you don't gear up your brain before takeoff, you'll probably gear up your airplane on landing.

ZS-JRC is also an AC690 which is standing virtually derelict at FAGC as V5-MGF.87Juliet wrote:JRA, JRB, JRH, JRL were all Commander 690's.....

Re: Registrations from the 70's
-JRA and -JRB were also the <first> of the modern Turbo Commanders that came into SA, AFAIR. John Winson bought them as a package to start Wing Airways (1977-ish?) and his expenditure seemed astronomical at the time; but those two aircraft set his business on its feet and easily paid for themselves, many times over, and they flew big hours. Later, he also acquired -JRH (or was it -JRL?), in addition to a fleet of other aircraft (B200, C441, AC680F and FL -- three of these, C402 x 2, C340, Beech Duke).
So, -JRA and -JRB were important aircraft sales for Astra Commander.

Both JRA and JRB are Met Research aircraft based at FALA, after being at FABM for a long time.

JRL(11339) was John's thrid Commander which was a 690B. Ret Orsmond bought all three and put them back in the air.
JRL is now in the US as N32WS.
AFAIR COMAVI (SP) were the Rockwell agents at the time. JRA (11284) and JRB (11248) were 1975 Models IIRC

Re: Registrations from the 70's
Although not a 70's model, does anybody know whether ZS CTC , Aero Commander 680F, now standing derelict at Harare, is off the Register ??
If the wings are travelling faster than the fuselage, it has to be a Helicopter and therefor unsafe. ....Fixed wing Pilot.

Re: Registrations from the 70's
According to the registration database it is still registered, but no longer airworthy. It is a 1962 model.

There is - I gave it to him and then some time afterwards lost my collection in a fire. I don't have access to his collection anymore.AC6T wrote:Did that have the Perspex or Glass windshields? Hi Dirkddevos wrote:According to the registration database it is still registered, but no longer airworthy. It is a 1962 model.
Thanks for the info. The aircraft concerned is pictured on my Avatar, and the picture was taken in 1972 at Port Alfred Airfield, about the time that I did my conversion onto it. I used it to get to Contracts in Northern Natal, East London, Port Alfred and Grahamstown , from Durban until about mid 1977. What a beautiful stable platform for Instrument Flying. I really am devestated to see the latest picture of it , which is available on www.avcom.co.za/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=64082.
