M2OP MPI hours and cost

Unread post by andrem »

Hi guys,

I was quoted 26 hours for a standard M20J MPI - does this sound right?

I want to ask permission to assist with the work on the plane so I can get to know her a bit better. Any thoughts / suggestions in this regard?

Tx,

Andre

IINM, the hours for my F is 22, so for the J with electric gear & flaps, 26 sound about right. As for the owner assist part, that will probably differ from AMO to AMO. I know that it is quite common in the US, but I haven't heard of anyone local doing it - or should I rather say, any local AMO allowing it. :?

Thanks Lood, I'm sorted and allowed to help / observe / learn. Even though I cannot do any of the work myself I would still like to know how the various systems in the aircraft works. Will let you know how it went.

Hi
Please tell me what an average mpi costs?
and how exactly does it work/is it calculated ie. when it an mpi due.
Can you also state the cost of 50hr and how it differs from mpi.
what about overhaul of prop, mags etc
Thanks

An average MPI can cost just about anything and is dependent on many, many variables: what type of airplane, whether any time limited items are due for inspection, overhaul or replacement, whether any unknown snags surface during the MPI, etc, etc, etc. Personally, I've had MPI's set me back R18k to as much as R100k.
All certified airplanes need to have an MPI carried out on them every 100 hours or 1 year, whichever comes first.
The 50hr inspection is basically that, just a general inspection and an oil change. Once again, they aircraft type will determine the cost but generally, it's not expensive on light GA airplanes. A 50hr on my airplane costs about R3k, IIRC.
This depends on the type, model and manufacturer of the prop. In my case, the TBO on the prop is every 2400 hours or 10 years with a midlife inspection at half life - i.e at 1200 hours or 5 years. The costs are also dependent on the condition of the blades and hub. If it got damaged, you can face a complete overhaul at the first inspection - basically a new prop.
Mags, alternator, etc are generally inspected or overhauled every 5 years, while hoses are done every eight years and so on. Aircraft needs to be re-weighed every 5 years.
On certain carb models, the carb has to be overhauled every 8 - 10 years. My fuel injection system is overhauled every 2000 hours.

If you can be more specific on the aircraft that you have or intend to have, the answers to your questions can be much more direct and sensible.
