EDM-700 in a M20J

Does anyone on the forum use this device? Pro's and cons? ANy other brands that work well in this type?

From what I can pick up the M20J engine can run LOP well without GAMIjectors, so that is the intention of getting a digital engine monitor.

Andre, I use the JPI EDM700 with fuel flow and I will never, ever fly without an engine monitor again. Should I buy another airplane that does not have one fitted, I will have one installed immediately. The fuel flow is very nice to have but the engine monitor is essential, in my opinion. Even more so after having forked out R350k for a new engine.
I've flow my F LOP on two different occasions and it runs perfectly well, looses about 8 - 10kts in the cruise and uses 6 - 8 liters less fuel at 20 deg LOP - all that on standard injectors. I did the Gami lean test on my engine and the spread between my standard injectors was 0.5 gal - which is very good and eliminates the need for Gami's. I have not gotten around to do that test on my new engine, which also has new injector all round.

According to many, many US Mooney pilots, the M20J does indeed run very well and comfortably LOP. Although I'm sure that other brands, like EI will perform similar, JPI's products are probably the most popular. There are a whole range of models, doing lots of different things, but the EDM700 does everything you need at a reasonable price.
Mine does CHT, EGT, volts, temp difference between the hottest and coldest cylinders, shock cooling, etc, etc, etc. It also does all the fuel flow functions that you can imagine - especially since I have my GPS connected to it. Load any waypoint or route in the GPS and the fuel requirements, reserves, times, etc are all immediately available on the JPI.
Even if you don't use it to fly LOP, it pays for itself by letting you manage your engine PRECISELY and not approximately and you can see everything that's going on with each cylinder and more. The data download function is very nice and you can identify certain trends in your engine over time and see when anything is out of the order.

Thanks Lood, sounds like you have the basic unit plus a few options. Did you buy in SA or import from USA?

The EDM700 is indeed the entry level JPI, but it does everything else that all the others do, except for RPM, MP, % power and fuel level in the more advanced models.
The bigger brothers have these extra's, but it comes at a huge price. Not worth it in my opinion, simply because all, except for the EDM900/930, still require you to keep the original gauges and are not certified to serve as primary replacement. If I pay R60k odd for a EDM830, for instance, I don't want to keep the old stuff.
The certified models will set you back around R80k, at least and they can replace all other engine and fuel instruments and gauges.

I did some horse trading with my EDM700 when I had a few avionics removed that were obsolete to me. So, I swapped it and it didn't cost me anything. At the time, however, its price was around R12k, without the fuel flow option.
Today, it would be more like R20k, ex fuel flow and installation. If I had to start from scratch and didn't feel the need for a primary JPI, I would buy the EDM730.
My installation was done by the guys down at SA Mooney and I haven't had one days' problem.

Thanks Lood, some thinking to do here. Looks like 730 is $450 more for only a USB port, so may just go for the 700.

The 730 does have a very nice display that also gives more info at the same time, but that's about it.

Where is the best place to buy it? I see that buying from JPI directly is more expensive than from some of the retail outlets....

Maybe try Spruce. I'm not sure whether there would be local guys that actually carry these in stock. You can also try Hennie Viljoen. He ships all kinds of airplane parts from the US and gets a container almost weekly. I'll PM you his contact details.

I Have an edm930 in my m20j. Very happy with it. However, you don't need to spend as much - like Lood mentioned you can get pretty much the same functionality with the 700 series.
If you let something bother you, IT WILL BOTHER YOU!!!

Thanks Nick, I see the EDM 930 replaces a lot of the original equipment, so makes definite sense to look at in future when a panel upgrade needs to be considered.

For now I just want to get to LoP safely and protect the engine to past TBO (in Namibia you can still get 10% +10% on condition.)

Ons het ons JPI vanaf Aircraft Spruce bestel en Pat by SA Mooney het dit geinstalleer.

Het ook die olietemperatuur probe laat insit so maand terug. Ek stem met Lood saam, weet nie of ek wil vlieg sonder die instrument nie!
