Also - Eric Cook is an AME that has just moved to Robertson and has plenty of Mooney experience. Combine the MPI with a holiday ;-).

TonyL - We are very new here in Robertson as we have only just taken over the AMO. Give us a few weeks and we will see if we can help out in connection with your accommodation requirements but any maintenance requirements we can facilitate!
Hi Andre - Many thanks for the shout out as above. We finally made it here! Hope they were able to rebuild your muffler. If you need any help don't hesitate to call us and look forward to seeing you in the winelands with VPM.

Glad you're safe Eric - muffler and cowling should both be ready by tomorrow.

Enjoy the Cape - perhaps we'll see you there before too long ;-).

The pan that Andre mentioned that Myself and wife went to is Verneukpan. You land on the pan and either camp there or stay in two caravans. It is like you would imagine, starry nights, desolate, quiet and very hot during the day. Not sure how the weather is this time of year. We went down in January. Giel was very friendly and borrowed us his bike to mess around on the pan and also in case of an emergency to drive to his house which is about 20 minutes away from pan. There is also a gas operated fridge that really helped during the day when you need something cold to drink.
I am keen for a fly-in anywhere.

Here are some details that I got via email from owner:

This time of year, the days are mild and can be actually very, very nice. The nights, however can easily go down to well below "0". Not recommended to camp in the Kalahari, from May to August.
I have a very basic, open hunting camp on my farm. The hunters loved it, but we have seen winter temperatures asow as minus 13 :!:

So,

Molopo lodge
Thuru lodge
Roberstons
Gariep
Port Alfred(Is this an option? Home of SA mooney. A bit too far for some, especially Andre who is based in Namibia).

Where is everyone based?

I am based at Wonderboom.

I'm 15nm from Gariep and I own a farm between Van Zylsrus and Askham, so Molopo Lodge would fit as well. Thuru Lodge is almost along the way. I don't really mind where, for me, timing will be more of a decisive factor.
Talking about Port Alfred, when last have you guys been there :?: I flew there two weeks ago and that runway is pushing me to reconsider. I just can't accept that my Mooney, or any other for that matter, leave Port Alfred without current or future snags or damage as a result. My vocabulary is always expanded quite substantially, every time I use what they like to call a runway.

Lood, I must agree, flew in and out of FAPA 3 weeks ago and both runways and taxiways is in a bad state. On Pat's recommendation I deflate the tyres substantially and that does help a bit.

I had a look at Thuru Lodge on the web and it seem to be an ideal spot for a fly-in. It is not to far out for Andre and still makes for some time in the cruise for most others I would think. Robertson is beautiful with lots to do, being FAGG based I'll just have to fly via FABL to make it feel right!

Hi Guys,

Sorry been out of comms for a bit, I think Thuru Lodge is a very good choice, I am based in FAPM but more than happy to fly out that side.

Should we look at dates? September suites me,

Regards
Marc

Thuru Lodge looks wonderful.

I have a 4 year old daughter who will join us, not sure who else has kids?

Anyone know how child-friendly they are? We are not too fussed, but some exclusive camps do not welcome kids.

Nope. I'm going to be testing out my arctic clothes and thermal underwear in Katberg this weekend.

Talking about fly inns . . . I would like to extend a personal invitation to the Mooniacs to come to the EAA national convention at Wings Park from 8 to 10 August. I'm not an EAA member but am a Wings Park local and will make a special effort for the Mooney bunch. PM me if you are keen on coming and want any assistance with accommodation, etc.

Thuru Lodge 2014 Pricelist EMail.pdf
Hi Guys,

I have sent off a request for a bit more info on the lodge and availability in September, they came back with the following (See attachment for pricing):

"The only dates that has been booked this far in September is 20 to 26 September so any time before/after that we can work something out.

Just a short description of our lodge: We have 8 double rooms with en-suite bathrooms as well as an extra house with 2 bedrooms with their own bathrooms that we use as part of the lodge for a group that will require more than 8 rooms.

Please find attached our pricelist. You will see that for groups of 8 or more we have a flat rate of R680/person for all of the rooms and not R900/person for our more exclusive rooms. This price includes bed & breakfast. We then have 3 dinner options: 2course meal @ R130/person, 3-course meal @ R175/person and a braai (also 3course) @ R160/person.

Please find attached our pricelist. Depending on the ages of the children we will work on rates for accommodation & meals".

Can we have a show of hands who is keen and the best dates in September? I am free the first 2 weekends.

Regards
Marc
