Electronic Fuel Injection

Unread post by Wingsoverafrica »

Ok guys as promised here are some photos of the complete system. The parts arrived this past week. Before we start my son and myself will be doing some performance testing on our J400 and documenting everything. We doing this so we can make an accurate comparison with regards to performance before and after.

Ok this system was supplied by Edgeperformance in Norway. Electronics are simple Digital Systems in Canada. These guys have had great success with many different engine include both 4 and 6 cylinder jabiru engines. 200-400 rpm increase fuel flows between 13-18 LP/H in the cruise.

Attached are a few pictures of the supplied parts. Everything is supplied. Only items I will have to supply are fasteners and a return fuel line to my hopper tanks, maybe switch/ breaker and an additional backup battery which was planned anyway.

We hope to start the installation second week in June. I will be documenting the whole process, wish me luck :D :D . I have been told by Thomas from edge performance not too panic , he's just a call away :)

Hey guys, I am the son in this whole brain fart :D .

The Idea on the EFI is to make a good economical aircraft even better. With the way the fuel price is going and the general cost of flying this is going to be a welcome mod.

the EFI is just part of the mod, there are 2 secret mods which will be reviled later in the build.

My dad mention that we going to be doing testing of the aircraft before and after.

The test will be done with myself and another pilot plus full fuel, giving me a aircraft weight at which I normal fly at. I have hardly flown the jabiru at max gross weight.

THE TESTING WILL BE : Static RPM before and after
Short Field take and landing including normal take off
Climb testing to 10 000ft, I do a lot of flying at that altitude
Cruise and fuel flow in different rpm settings and at 2000ft 4000ft 6000ft 8000ft 10000ft
We will also be exploring the bottom of the envelope with VG'S installed and without.

All the testing on the Jab after the EFI is installed will be done on Pure MOGAS no mix.

Thanks JJ, going to need all the help I can get. I have attached both the manual for the FI and Electronics. I have more information on the installation which is unfortunately not electronic yet.

Hi Guys
Looks really interesting.
The fuel injection kit from George appears to be a myth ... so I'm hoping it's a success.
Any clues on the ball park project cost ?

Are you planning to run MOGAS ?
I would have been very interested to see the before and after up here in JHB, there are J400
bargains to be had but I'm too scared of thier performance up here.

Cheers
Dak

Hi Dak

I don't have ball park figure yet, To scared to work it out.

As soon as the Jab is done I will bring it to Joburg, and see what she can do.

Just to confirm, once EFI is installed it will be running on MOGAS!!!! :D :D :D

Good luck with the installation. Apart from the performance tests you will be doing, a lot of Jabbi owners would also be keen to know what the increase in weight will be (read: vetgatte) as well as the total cost (read: arm gatte) and hours spent to do the conversion. We would also like to know what the level of expertise are that will be employed to do the conversion to learn whether guys with two left hands should try it or rather leave it to the experts.

( Aldo, vetgatte means someone that spends a lot of time in the gym. Arm gatte means guys who have spent a lot of time at the gym and other expensive places)

Can one legally do the mod yourselve or should it be done by an AMO? What other legal implications are there? I asume the aircraft will have to be reweighed. New ATF? Insurance implications?

Hi to answer a few of your questions. To date most of the maintenance on CYR has been done by my son and myself. We will weight everything that is removed and fitted during the install. My son and myself will do the installation ourselves. As the owner and pilot of a ZU aircraft this is quite legal. I intend using a AME to check out the work progress and for my piece of mind. The install itself is very straight forward besides some welding that needs to be done for the injector bosses and O2 censor , I should be able to complete the whole install. As far as Im aware there are no legal implications, will not require a new ATF. We will re-do the WB after the installation. The installation should take no longer than 2 weeks. :D :D

Here are some photos of other installations. Not too complicated.

You will need to file a Modification Approval form with RAASA, as well as getting the installation and W&B signed out by an AMO/AP.

As i said the Installation will be signed out by a AME. As for RAASA, will make the enquiries. Cant find anything on there website. Is this requirement for engine mods or all modifications?
