"Antic" static display model- Completed

Unread post by Theuns v V » Sun Aug 07, 2016 4:08 pm

I was commisioned to build a series of vintage looking static display models for a restaurant group.
We decided to go with something that looks like the proctor antic monoplanes as a guide.

I designed a 2.2m span model that will fit in with the theme of the restaurant "Old time Italy"
Therefore the model depicts the early years of air racing and will be named "Grande gara aria Italiano 1911" - great Italian air race 1911

I made wheels from discs of 3mm balsa shees glued to make a plywood.
Then I glued spokes to the base and covered it with solartex. It as then painted with humbrol "linnen" paint and the shadows of the spokes were pre-shaded under the linnen paint to show through.
Although it seems overdone, just like in the theatre you need to have it like that because of the lighting that it would be under in the display area
Then I cut and glued a length of 14mm rubber hose to form a tire. The joint was then filled and sanded followed by a coat of Tamiya's rubber black

the open rear fuse structure is made up from 10mm round hardwood dowls, each joint needed to be 1/2 filed out to make a good mitre joint. As an extra safety feature I drilled a 2.5mm hole in each joint and glued a piece of toothpick in it
The front part of the fuse is from ply.
It is not a flying model but I still needed to design the airframe to take the strain of being suspended form years....

Hallo oom Theuns

Ek het 2 Antic's, een met 91FS en die ander met DLE111. Dus net jammer daar was nooit n Full Size Airplane nie, hy lyk mooi en vlieg lekker.

Sterkte met die bou en lyk baie mooi sover.

Groete

A rare talent in this day and age, awesome work Theuns.
May this inspire all of us to get back to the building board
