Some questions from AUS
Hi there
I am just about to start a J430 build here in Tasmania, Australia and have noticed a few things about the SA jabs that are a little different to the Aus versions and was hoping that someone might answer a couple of questions.
1. I see that a lot of the shadowlite jabs have black door trims and was wondering if this is purely aesthetic?
2. Most of the SA jabs I see don't seem to use the camlocks on the cowling, has this ever been a problem?
3. I also like the idea of the cessna tires, and was wondering what is involved in adapting the nosewheel to a larger tire as well, dont really want the prop closer to the ground.
regards
Mike

Re: Some questions from AUS
Hi Mike
Welcome to our little corner!
Let me try and answer some of your questions.
1. I see that a lot of the shadowlite jabs have black door trims and was wondering if this is purely aesthetic?
No. They are external door seals and do not work very well. Flying through rain will guarantee a free shower for the occupants. And parking it in the rain will ensure that the door pockets have a nice supply of fresh water in them for you. The newer type of door that recess into the fuselage is much better, and the little gutter on top helps a great deal.
2. Most of the SA jabs I see don't seem to use the camlocks on the cowling, has this ever been a problem?
Only the very old "nostril" type cowls do not have camlocks. All the ones after that use 4 camlocks as well as the "piano wire hinges" as well.
3. I also like the idea of the cessna tires, and was wondering what is involved in adapting the nosewheel to a larger tire as well, dont really want the prop closer to the ground.
You need to have a larger front fork machined. We have a supplier (non Jabiru factory) who makes those. A bit pricey at ZAR 5000 but very nice.
Regards
Ben

Re: Some questions from AUS
Thanks Ben
The front fork is something that I will definitely investigate down the track.
I forgot to ask if anyone as a 430 POH (760 MAUW) that they would like to share, interested in getting started om that and having a look a the W&B calc sheet.

Do you have the 760kg kit? Not sure if it is available in Australia?Tasmag wrote:Thanks Ben

I am about to order the kit at the end of the month, and yes it will be the 760Kg version. (Although I don't think there is any real difference between the kits).

There is a difference in wing and fuselage structure. I don't have a 760kg POH handy, but I am sure someone will post the details soon.Tasmag wrote:Heisan

I do have half a plan to update to the 432 down the track, have spoken with the factory and they advise that it may be an option to do the conversion at the factory when they finish the testing.

Had a look at the SA site and still cant seem to find a 430 POH, Aus only have the 230 as they don't sell the 430 as a factory built aircraft. It is quite possible that I am just not looking in the correct place on the SA site though.

Attached a nice W&B auto calc Excel sheet that Wynand Uys made for us many moons ago. Worked like a charm on my 430.

The 2012 revised POH for my 430. Although mine was the 700kg model should give you something to play with.
