Noisy radio

Unread post by antonvalks »

I am one of those pilots who always seem unable to properly set or adjust the radio to have good comms.  On the ground, engine off, 5/5 comms. Engine on, I immediately have a noisy radio and struggle to communicate both inside the aircraft and with tower or other traffic.

I found this on the internet http://www.jabiru430.com/Radio_noise.html which would indicate it is a common problem with the Microair radio and/or installation.

Can someone please explain how to go about setting the radio up. I just want to make sure it is not my stupidity that causes the radio noise. I have the volume and squelch knob on the radio as well as a seperate one for the internal comms.

Hi
Do a test. Disconnect your voltage regulator an fly without it and the test your radio. Replace if needed.

One of our customers who works with a lot of Jabiru aircraft installs an MGL Avioguard to supply the radio. This device takes whatever power you throw at it, no matter how bad, and produces nice clean DC at 13.2V (even if the input voltage is less).
This sorts out trouble with any radio that is sensitive to electrical noise on its supply.

Ensure that the radio screws home flush with the actual mounting. In my case the radio was 4mm short of home because the actual panel was not cut properly to allow this!

Hi used to have endless proplems with a MGL V6 radio that was so bad with interference in flight that normal communications was very difficult. As with the OP, it was 5/5 on the ground with engine and other electronic off.

Discussed with Rainier from MGL and he queried two things:
1. If I had any EFIS with screen (I did have the MGL Voyager system)
2. The distance of the antenna from the MGL EFIS screen.

Long story short, my antenna was too close to the EFIS screen (+/- 2m) and that caused the interference.
I relocated the antenna to the rear empenage (instead of above the cockpit) and problem sorted 100%.

To test, go fly and switch off your EFIS in flight, if comms improve your antenna is too close to the EFIS screen.

Pm me if you want to chat.

Good morning everyone. I also have radio noise, but it is only when you ptt and testing a bit seems to be only when at full rpm.
It is a massively loud static noise, ear killing in fact only when talking to general traffic or towers. No noise on ground, no noise during finals where rpms are lower etc and also clear intercom regardless of rpm. It is only during ptt. I have the micro air and garmin setup with separate intercom. Garmin is used as primary, but even switching to micro air results in this same transmit noise.
I have switched off the efis in flight, no difference. Only slowing down engine seems to work at this stage. Traffic/tower have never complained about transmissions, i expect they are clear, but my ears don't agree.

Has anyone perhaps had similar issues that were resolved?

Thanks and have a great day

Is this a newly developed issue or has it always been there?

Also, can you check by switching off each mag/coil to see if they are both noisy?

Just make sure that you have NO usb devices in the plane.

Not even a Powerbank...

Creates havoc on an AM radio

The noise has always been there. Will give the mag thing a go and let know.
I do not have any USB gadgets at all.

We have had a similar thread long ago searched for it. From what I can remember the grounding of the engine was the reason :? the thick open wire at the starter corroded on the lug.

The correct grounding/ earthing is often overlooked, here is a great video on the basics of grounding comms in an aircraft to reduce radio noise.
