It feels like years ago but in April 2019 I took Zumer to Piet Retief Mondi, slept over there and went to the EAA convention with Johan, a builder at Piet Retief Mondi.

Somewhere in July 2019 all my old precision flying friends were busy practicing for an ANR event. You get a map with a corridor marked out. You have to fly inside this corridor using basic equipment as in a compass and a stopwatch. All aircraft flies at a speed of 80 Kts. This is the only time that I wished for an slower aircraft. Below is the map after I have prepared it. The entry gate is top right where the time 12:15 is written in.
IMG_4580.JPG
Below is may track flown - most of the time with full flaps. Old habits die hard and I instinctively went PAST some checkpoints and thereby busted the corridor. One is allowed to turn short of the points in order to stay within the corridor.

Believe me it is 20 minutes of intense concentration.

As time went on I have realized that at some stage I will have to repaint Zumer as the 10 plus years and normal use has taken it's toll. One take off a panel and where the skins overlapped, one could see the surface corrosion. Luckily only surface corrosion. I also had a few paint bubbles appearing in various places. Like the picture below that was taken of a wing skin. It is small but I did not like it.
IMG_8135L.jpg
And underneath on the flaps and ailerons where surface corrosion has been removed but not painted nicely.
IMG_8134L.jpg
I started fixing a few things like the rudder bottom, the canopy fiberglass in front of the plexi glass and other small items. This was done as part of the preparation for the complete repaint.

One item was the nose wheel spat. A bit of glass work, fill in, sand and one coat of paint for the time being.

Then I have decided to also redo the bottom intersection fairings. Stripped the paint off, bonded on the new ones. Then you have to split it and do a lot of fiberglass, sanding and filling.

And more fiberglass work and filling

Almost there :)

Would be great to see you back at ANR events Jan! You missed one two weeks ago... ZOOMER looks like she'd be great for Speed Rallies too!

Middle of March this year came the call that there is an opening at Aero Colour Lanseria. I ferried over to Lanseria and removed all flight control surfaces and everything else needed to prep it for painting.

Then primed

I realize that I did not post on my lockdown project here. During lockdown I have designed nav/strobe/landing light modules specifically for RV wingtip. Zumer got the first two lights installed.

Below is a cad render of the module.

And as installed in Zumer.

And below a test - the far end down the road is about 300 meters away :D
