I see Avcom is being bashed again on another forum... I found a home here because generally speaking its a great place to be. I've been an aviation enthusiast since I was a kid, which included collecting and building models, RC planes, Photography, Sim flying and ultimately a failed stint as a PPL for medical reasons.

I like it here because I feel welcome even though I'm not a 10k hour ATPL. Other forums don't seem to like non-pilots participating.. and it gets obvious quite quickly. Avcom is inclusive :D

Smear campaigns are the sincerest form of flattery. Those who are worried about their own inadequacies will invariably launch attacks against their superiors. :smt003

Heli pilots are far less easily offended. You need a sense of humour to fly rotary.

True,

With the crash rate of Helicopters - they are mere temporary citizens.
Make the most of it whilst amongst us ........

The low fly by thread was going off on a tangent so rather than continue the trend I though this thread may be more appropriate.
Professionals, vs amateur (GA) pilots and avcom. Complex relationship, discuss..

Personally my goal when posting has been to provide some balance and a bit of devil's advocate.
I don't "do" social media and prefer the crowd of reprobates that hangs around in a more narrowly focused location like avcom.
It is in my nature to question why someone believes something.
Enter the pro pilot (sorry, generalising here again), urinating on the topic and justifying it because of the thickness of the logbook but strangely not actually adding anything constructive.
Why does that attitude appear so often?
Don't even try question a view because that is disrespectful.
One would hope the status of professional would always translate to professional on the page but that isn't always the case.
Why do people get so intolerant of things others do when they have also likely done it themselves in the past?

You read many interesting posts and often great ones from enthusiasts, or those starting the aviation journey.
Something happens to someone when they take themselves too seriously.
I'm happy (well not THAT happy) to be made to feel a tool if I have said something that someone clearly shows is bollocks and takes the time to correct the error of my ways.
But just playing the man, that's just too easy (and often far too tempting).

We have all kinds here and it adds value.
Too many won't participate in case some big dog comes along to mark their territory.
Seriously okes, it's just a forum.
There is nothing important or life changing going on here and someone's opinion is not going to make your manhood any smaller than it already is. Being a dweeb won't make it any larger either.

Diversity is a good thing, embrace it.
You don't have to diminish someone to feel better about yourself.

I have to respectfully disagree. Many regard Academy & Flight Safety to be vitally important, and yes, even life changing.

True again ....... =D>

Perhaps being a tad more pragmatic and trying to understand the intent and tone of the poster would serve us all well.
A lot of us are (I know I am generalizing now) pilots that have been flying for many years - and set in our ways ...
Yet were we to meet in a bar - and say something with a smile on our face - the receiver would be less likely to throw his toys out of the cot, yet on an internet forum we seem to lack that ability (and I include myself) ...

It is a daunting dilemma - and this internet debating is harder than we think,
Lets try to keep each other in check and those that are still flying - alive

I found you on FB - so you do do social media...... And I did not play the man , as you put it , I merely put a suggestion forward, you could insert any pseudonym you choose, and speaking in the third person is so nineties man, just say what you mean and mean what you say. Sorry i did not address you for fear of rebuttal...

Jokes aside here, I actually agree with JK here - if we were to meet in a bar - maybe some day - I am sure things will be largely amicable and will get on famously.

I agree Jim.

Avcom, or rather those one Avcom, have helped a lot (especially Cage, Rotorkop and PilotC).

They say it takes 20 years to get 20 years experience (replace years with hours to make it more aviation related). I don't have the years/hours of experience, but I've learnt a lot in a very short time on this site, even by just observing casual banter and serious arguments.

Sadly I have an account, largely as all the family does.
Most of the time line will be from friends and I think 3 posts in modern times?
Unfortunately with so many people using it, even tanglefoot, it's almost impossible to not belong.

Wasn't referring to you in my opining, was speaking generally about the local demographic of those who really want to be seen as professional.
(Not that I'm implying you're not professional! ;))

There generally isn't a person to name (if you do then you get shouted at anyway), I often refer to trends or a group with similar properties as one person rarely makes a difference.

It's so easy to be misunderstood or to have words put in your mouth.
Of all the things that makes me want to stop participating it's when you get flogged for something that has been read into an opinion.
