Christmas 2018

Unread post by scanavphoto » Sat Dec 01, 2018 12:18 am

It's just past midnight in Southern Africa, making it December 1st and the first day of Advent. I thought we could start in Pietersburg in 1990.

nice photo

I left the squadron in 1989
they closed down shortly after this, as I was at the closing down cerremony
In the final paint scheme before disbandment, the castle emblem was re-applied after many years without any markings at all

I thought we could stay at AFB Pietersburg and the same event in March 1990 with a slightly more colourful photo - if you consider camouflage colourful that is. That said, the Silver Falcon in the background is more colourful...

I'm afraid we're going back to grey... But it is a very cool aircraft. I still remember when I first saw a Soviet pilot with that type of helmet. I saw the Soviet first, then the South African and was flabbergasted when I learned the story. He served his masters well, that Dieter Gerhardt. But back on track - the Mirage is a seriously weird and cool machine. My Mirage encounters were with the Belgians. They kept the Mirage in the French-speaking part of the condition that is Belgium, but as they say, that is a different story. Here we are at AFB Pietersburg in March 1990.

Safair is an interesting airline. ZS-GSK was their first Hercules if memory serves me right and it was named Boland. The GSK was the initials of the head of Safmarine at the time.

Not a great picture, but it does tell a story from 1970

I also see two Harvard noses way in the background.

=D> Love the photies. Can almost smell them too, still. (Ever put your nose against the old mil aircraft and inhaled deeply? Their smell was so unique in many ways :))
