Nieuport 24
I am in the very kucky position of having been given a 1/4 built kit of a full size Aerodrome Nieuport 24.
Now this will be a long term project as with 2 kids at school funds for this will be extremely limited at the moment.
I have built a full size Super cub from plans only so fo me building a kit will be a treat
I am hoping to collect next week and will then plan my next move on how to tackle this project, stay tuned

Are you sure its 1/4 scale .. that would put it in R/C territory ?Theuns v V wrote: Sun Jan 20, 2019 6:11 am I am in the very kucky position of having been given a 1/4 built kit of a full size Aerodrome Nieuport 24.

Uncle Bear, I think he meant it’s 1/4 complete or 25% built

Re: Nieuport 24
with the help of Peter we collected the kit today from Raymond Tahk you both
It will be alot easier build than the scratchbuilt L-18 I did some time ago.
Now the long road begins

Re: Nieuport 24
Having scratch built a full size replica before I know how much time it takes to do so and the effort that goes into it so what I will do is the complete and cover the rudder to final colour, this will then be placed where I can see it every day to enspire me to put the time in

Re: Nieuport 24
Rudder hindges linned up wit old school way. riveted in and after a cleaning the frame is ready to cover
I will have to get a pneumatic rivet puller, the few rivets I put in the hindges now took every bit of power I could muster

Re: Nieuport 24
I wanted to try loomstate fabric on full size, had good results on models with it to I covered thr rudder.
The fabric does not shrink as well as pollifiber or ceconite. Even applied tuaght and shrunk to 350degF it feels more " stretchy"
I brussued on a coat of dope and this morning saw the bumps in the fabric, the dope goes through the loomstate allot easier than I am use to with the certified fabrics.
I tried heat to melt them away but no use, I also know there is no way sanding them away so I decided to strip off the fabric.
What concerbed me is how fairly easy the fabric stripped off the frame, even though I used certified glue onto the alluminium frame....dont like this atall
So, I might have to stick to a certified fabric, have sewn emveloupes made up for the frames and see if that works better.

Re: Nieuport 24
Theuns, did the glue bond well with the tube and separate from the fabric or did the fabric and glue separate from the tube ?
What is the price comparison between the loomstate and certified materials ?
Lastly what weight is the loomstate equivalent to 1.9 oz or 2.7Oz ?
I hope you have found a solution in the time between posts on this project

Re: Nieuport 24
I cant recall the exact weight of the loomstate but t is a little lighter than the standard 2.7 Oz certified medium fabric.
As for comming off the frame, it did not fail or pull loose by itself, I was just not happy with the bond on the small trailing edge tube and will now rather have a sewn seam on the trailing edges.
I just covered a dechthlon last week with same size steel tubes but I used pollifiber and it stuck down like I know it to

Re: Nieuport 24
I did not have success with the loomstate on full size, on models works fine for me.
I have worked on the rudder only this weekend, to busy with other projects for now. Want to get it painted up so I can maybe get inspired to do more work.
