Engine cutting back on power

Unread post by foxdog »

Hi Guys,
On the take off run I noticed that the engine came back from full power then back onto full power a couple of times.
It was not mis fireing but sounded like a lack of fuel
I aborted the take off and found that I had left the carb heat on.
On giving the engine a long full power check with no problem I continued to fly for 4 hours with no problem.
My question is could the carb heat application cased the problem or is there perhaps another problem
Regards,
Foxdog

Carburetor heat uses hot air drawn from the heat exchanger or heat stove (a metal plate around the exhaust manifold) to raise the temperature in the venturi section high enough to prevent or remove any ice buildup. Because hot air is less dense than cold air, engine power will drop when carburetor heat is used.

Carb heat on the Jab would give you consistent lower power, not surging.

I had that on my J450 out of FAVG a number of years ago. Going from 2900 to 2100 and back. Did an immediate circuit and land. Found a huge clump of white residue in the bottom of the carb bowl that was causing intermittent blockages. Check this out first.
